This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share, usually about our horses, sometimes about our dogs, gardens and other stuff we do. :~)
I have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will ping everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Yeah, I think the Halloween Edition would be good because it’s sooner, but Thanksgiving would be good too because it’s all about getting together with friends and family and that’s what we’re all coming out there for. So either way it’ll be nice.
The fair was ~OK~ this year, but we were disappointed in a few things, the food was expensive and not very good. We tried three different meals, a bratworst, a bbq sandwich, and a cheeseburger... all were pretty bad :~)
It was a little too early in the week for many of the animals to be there. No horses there yet, except for the drafts, the 4H kids aren't there yet, there were goats and dairy cows there being shown, and lots of arts and crafts displays, we never did find the bunnies, if they were there yet.
Enjoyed watching the draft horse demonstration though... Here's pictures!
Two teams of Clydesdales... this four hitch
And this tricycle hitch, navigating the cones...
Many of these teams were described as very young teams. Many were described as three year olds. Not as polished in the demonstrations as in years past. They didn't all do some of the complicated things like backing and fanning, nor did they do the competition to see who could make the tightest cones, I think because they were pretty green horses. A few of the Belgians acted up a bit when he tried to fan them, just the stomping and head tossing of a confused horse really, and man, when those horses start acting up you realize how big they are.
Team of Percherons...
Team of Belgians...
And the guy with his ponies... who do everything at a dead run :~) That left lead pony of his reminds me a lot of our pony. Lots of personality, bucking and lunging around the whole way as fast as she can while dragging all that behind her. :~)
More from the fair in a bit :~)
That’s great to hear about Rocky doing so well. I’ll bet his canter will improve the more you ride him. He’s just gotten a little rusty and stiff during his time off. And that’s good to hear about Travis’s horse’s improvement too, as well as the possible change in the way his family thinks about handling their horses. It’ll be good for them and better for their horses.
So who was fighting and did anybody get hurt?
LOL!! Well, except for Beaker, we're all a buncha 40+ women, who's idea of a big night out on the town is to go have a burger and a beer, so how much trouble could we possibly get into? ;o)
Cool pics Hair! I think they’re doing extremely well for a bunch of young horses, and I love the ponies. I’ve never seen a team of them pulling a pony-sized wagon like that. I’ve just seen them driven single with a 2-wheeled cart and thought THAT was pretty cool.
There's been unfinished business between Gidget and Barkley, over pecking order, and it's probably not over yet. Barkley's a little food aggressive, not with us, but definitely with the dogs, and we've been managing it by making him go sit by his bowl and wait all the way across the room when we feed. He's been pretty good about that. Last night though, it was late and we were just wanting to get them fed and go to bed, so I just started pouring food in bowls, and he and Gidget got into it. And the thing is, we'd pull them apart, let go, and Barkley would rush her again. He doesn't quit! And neither does Gidget. She didn't start it, but after we finally had Barkley cowering over on his bed, she'd go stand and glower over him and I kept having to yell at her to drop it. ecurbh got bit in the hand by somebody in the process when he was in the middle of them. Not bad. We probably won't have to shoot him.
Homer stayed out of it, the funny thing was Cisco jumped in the middle of it. It was just too many dogs, too small a space, short tempers and hungry bellies.
I just thought the look on this goat's face while she was being milked was amusing... like "Hey... Do you have to watch?"
Tired pigmy goats...
And I didn't realize some people bring their women to show at the fair...
One or two of the grange displays. I love the grange displays :~)
Big pumpkin :~)
At the Weird Al concert... These ladies are doooooods. There's a whole row of them. I only could get these two with the camera without embarrassing ecurbh. Check out the look on the guy behind them. ;~)
Weird Al...
Aw MAN! That sounds like a free-for-all. But tempers get short when bellies are empty I guess. I’m glad ecurbh didn’t get bit bad. That’s always a risk when breaking up a fight like that. And I hate it when they all pile on when the fur starts to fly. I don’t know why they do it, even normally unagressive dogs like Cisco. It seems to just suck them in like a magnet. And even cats do it. I had a couple of my barn cats get into it a time or two, and as soon as it started, the other ones had to jump in and whip up on the one who seemed to be getting the worst end of it. Shirley told me that chickens do it too. One of them will start pecking on a smaller one and first thing you know, they’re all pecking it and they’ll peck it to death if you don’t take it out of the pen. Animals are strange sometimes!
I LOVE pygmie goats and that woman sleeping in the goat pen is hysterical! Someone should stick a blue ribbon on her forehead and let her wonder how it got there when she wakes up. The grange displays are cool too and that pumpkin is enormous. Those always amaze me and I have to wonder how they manage to move them without them collapsing under their own weight. The guy behind the Dudettes looks like he’s thinking “What the hell are YOU looking at, and why are you taking pictures?!”
I think that pumpkin weighs 1,060 pounds. How do you move it there, is a good question!
And of course the answer is ...... Verry carefully!
Da dum dum...thankyouverymuch, I'll be here all week! ;o)
I decided I would go out while the thing was still small and set it on a pallet. :~) Maybe that’s what they do. :~)
Have you ever seen these clear plastic pumpkin mold things that you put around the pumpkins when they’re tiny and they grow to fill out the mold and then you take it off and it continues to grow that way and you end up with a full-sized pumpkin that already looks like a head without being carved? I saw one once in a catalog and though it was a cool idea didn’t order one and I’ve never seen them again. I’ll have to google and see if I can find them...
They're called Vegiforms and they've got them for all kinds of squash and cucumbers and stuff. I think that would be so fun to do. Here's a link to the site where I found it.
Hey that is pretty cool :~)
Do you know what happens when you take a water hose to two dogs that are fighting?
You get two wet dogs and a wet person, unless of course you’re talking about beating them with it. ;o)
The water hose was my first thought too, but I guess it’s kinda hard to hose them down when they’re in the house.
You get two wet, cooled downed, revived dogs, ready to go for round two:’)
Is that bizarre looking or what! I imagine they fit in the refrigerator pretty good though.
