2 Bastrop police officers killed (Louisiana)
KNOE TV ^ | August 10, 2007

BASTROP (TV8) - Morehouse Parish Sheriff Danny McGrew confirms two Bastrop police officers were shot and killed Friday afternoon in downtown Bastrop.

McGrew says one suspect was also shot and killed. Two emergency medical technicians were shot and wounded. One was reported to be in surgery at Morehouse General Hospital.

At least one other suspect was said to be in a standoff with police at the Best Budget Inn on South Franklin Street near the courthouse square.

McGrew said the suspects were possibly persons of interest in a double homicide in Texas, but that was not confirmed.

TV8 News reporter Jennifer Townley reports from the scene that part of downtown Bastrop has been sealed off, and both Bastrop City Hall and the Morehouse Parish courthouse have been placed under lockdown, and that two persons have been arrested.

SWAT teams equipped with helmets, shields and guns are taking up positions outside the Best Budget Inn. FBI agents are on the scene.

A caller who identified herself as Sharon Anders, manager of Altel's Bastrop store, said the FBI has ordered all Bastrop phone service disconnected until the situation is normalized.

Other details are sketchy.

A Bastrop police dispatcher who answered a phone call from TV8 News said she did not have time to talk and immediately hung up the phone.

Sterlington Police Chief Barry Bonner says he was notified that emergency personnel would be traveling through Sterlington en route to Bastrop in response to "an officer involved shooting."

A clerk in a store on the Bastrop courthouse square called KNOE TV8 News to describe the scene following the shooting. She says police armed with rifles are running around the area of a motel near the square. She also saw ambulances coming and going from the area.

Check in with KNOE.com and watch TV8 News for details on this developing story.

I know the officers that were killed, one of them I knew very well. The shootings occured directly across from the police department. My daughter works for the police department and this was a very frightening situation for all involved. My daughter was outside the police station and heard shots that made her hit the ground. She ran back into the police station and was called and told to lock down her office and stay away from the windows. She was alone and listening to gunfire for quite a long time and didn’t know what was going on.

Please pray for the families of the police officers that were slain. They were good officers and good men and it’s a great loss for all of us.

Louisiana, right? I caught the word “parish.”

Caught that too. Af first I though it was Texas, as their is a Bastrop here as well. ~35 mi SE of Austin.

But I see there is Texas connection.

Hope they catch up with the SOBs, who then resist arrest.

State Police said they are looking for 26-year-old Tonya Smith of the Houston area. She fled from the motel this afternoon in a stolen vehicle, State Police said.

Down thread, Middle Eastern mentioned. Not confirmed by

Story says "Large Black woman and older Black man arrested. Also says two people, not necessarily the same two, but perhaps, wearing FBI vests were handcuffed and lead away.

Now that's wierd.

Thank you for your post, Elyse. I know your daughter went through hell for a while. My husband had lunch in Bastrop today then thankfully returned to work in Mer Rouge.

I first learned of this on FreeRepublic while I was at work in Richland Parish. This is just crazy - shootings like this in the middle of a peaceful small town. I will definitely be praying for the families of these officers and for the Bastrop community as you all deal with the aftermath of this tragic event.

Thank you, nana. I’m glad your husband wasn’t caught in the middle of it. I think my daughter is still in shock. She worked closely with the slain officers and also knows the paramedics that were shot. As you said, it’s a small town and there is a lot of shock and disbelief that something like this could happen there, but like any small town it just looks peaceful on the surface. No one, No where is safe from an incident like this.

Bless her heart, Elyse. I’m from LA and my father has business associates in Bastrop. When I saw this I thought it must be another Bastrop. Am praying for all with special prayers for your daughter. God bless.
