Left Handers Day

When:  Always on August 13th

If you are a Leftie, Then Left Handers Day is just for you!

Left Handers, also commonly referred to as Southpaws, are the brunt of more than their share of jokes all year long. How do I know? Yup, you guessed it! It ain't easy being a leftie. But those of us who are, would have it no other way. Lefties are proud of it.

The world is built for right handers. Examples are everywhere. For example:

  • In school, have you ever seen a left handed desk? They don't exist.
  • Many left handed items cost more.
  • Novelty coffee mugs are made with the picture or text for a right handed pick-up.
  • Scissors for for right handers. Only a lefty would understand this.

  • The computer mouse you are using as you read this is designed for right handers.

Did you Know? Right handed people operate in the left side of the brain. Left handed people use the right side. Therefore, only left handed people are in their right mind.

Left Hander's certainly earned the right to have a day dedicated to them. And, August 13th is that day. So take a minute to appreciate your left handed friends and loved ones. Don't forget to send them a Left Handed Day Ecard to show your respect.

Remember today and every day: "Lefties have rights!"

Left Handed Facts and Trivia:

  • Sinistrophobia is the fear of left-handedness.
  • While many people are left handed, very few are 100% left handed. For example, many Left handers golf and bat right handed. On the other hand, there is a high percentage of righties who are 100% right-handed.

  • Lefties are also called "southpaws". The term was coined in baseball to describe a left handed pitcher.
  • Tuesdays are Lefties luck day.
  • Only about 10% of the population is left handed.
  • During the 1600's people, thought left handers were witches and warlocks.
  • International Left Hander's Day was first celebrated on August 13, 1976. It was started by Lefthander's International.

  • They say everyone was born right handed, and only the greatest overcome it. (he,he,he)
  • It is believed that all polar bears are left handed. Also see Polar Bear Day.
  • There is a rumor that octopuses have but one right hand. Scientists are diligently studying this issue.

Think about it: Everyone is a Left Hander in Left Hand, West Virginia.

Lefthander's Slogan: "Everyone is born right-handed. Only the greatest overcome it". ...Brilliant Author unknown

Well, if we are to believe everything on the ‘net, you are also: Breast Cancer More Likely In Left-Handers and Left-Handers More At RiskOf Mental Illness. Frankly, I wouldn’t get out of bed in the morning, if I were a lefty. ;-P

Yes they do. I had to sit at one once, and then I knew how the lefties felt.

I have left handed scissors and made my wife select a silver pattern with a two sided gravy ladle.

Most measuring devices, including all tape measures are made for right handers. For a lefty, the numbers are upside down

I did have some classes in college with left handed desks but they were always in the back of the room.

Until my mother died, she was apologetic for my being left handed.

I actually have a left-handed mouse. It’s a Logitech, and I bought it in 1997. They don’t make em anymore. I’m still using it. Doesn’t have the scroll wheel or any of those nifty new features, but I can live without those :)

Cool! I never heard of this, but it will make my grandson happy.

My mom was ambidextrous as is my grandson. Both write left handed. My cousin was totally left handed, and we had to make sure we sat with her to my left every Thanksgiving, otherwise we were bumping elbows through the whole meal!

We recently purchased a Logitech left-hand mouse with a scroll wheel for my boss. I just googled “left-handed mouse” to find it.

When I attended the U of Southern Miss in the late ‘80s I had several classes in College Hall. I was happy to find one left-handed desk which I carried with me from room to room for the semester.

I always say my “handedness” is the only thing “left” about me.

I have a left-handed mouse as well (which really screws up the IT guys when they have to work on my computer, LOL!). I really, really want to get a wireless ergonomic keyboard with a wireless left-handed mouse, but apparently nobody makes them. I don’t get why such an significant part of the market is being ignored.

The areas where things are a little dicey for lefties is using a circular or jigsaw (the sawdust comes out on the wrong side right into your face, or the blade protection is on the wrong side), and driving a straight stick where your non-dominant hand is used to shift the gears. I’d probably LOVE driving a stick in Britain.

Dyslexic lefties UNTIE!

I’m an admin and have answered phones most of my career and they all are designed for Right Handers - the receiver is always on the left (they assume you’ll pick it up with your left hand so that your right hand is free to write down anything of importance)...

I want a mouse with side buttons for my Battlefield game but it seems this is my only choice. I’m pissed they don’t make their higher models leftie.
