Actress Brooke Shields has blamed the legal troubles of stars such as Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie on bad parenting.

Shields, who has two children and admits she's a strict parent, believes Hollywood's young celebrities would be better behaved if their mothers had brought them up properly.

Have to disagree. I am sure the mothers did not help, but the ultimate responsibility lies with the individual. The blaming the parents and suggesting they are just victims does not fly. Sorry Brooke.

To some extent, she is correct in that responsible parenting would have taught these young women that actions have consequences, and fame brings responsibility, but after a certain point, people have to quit blaming their faults on their parents. These women made poor choices and displayed appalling judgment, (maybe due to a sense of entitlement from celebrity), but their choices weren’t dictated solely by parental teachings (or lack thereof).

It is interesting that Brooke Shields has decided to enter this debate, however, after her part in the PPD controversy.

I don't see the connection. Brooke Shields was a child actress, so her opinion on similar situations is an informed one, although of course not authoritative. She also experienced PPD, with a similar outcome: informed, but not authoritative.

However, those two situations - child actress and PPD - aren't related!

Bad parenting contributes to the overall bad picture here. I am sure people throwing money at these floozies and telling them everything they do is a photo opp is not helping. For the most part I doubt they grew up with any boundaries so they know none now. When the parents depend on the kids for income (for example Lohan) then they walk a tight rope of discipline because they think discipline equals cut-off!!

Dear Brooke....

Don't forget the affirmation and loving direction of the young girls' hearts that flows from good ol' Dad....

Children need the love, nurture, correction, and value that flows from BOTH parents....

Said my piece....

Have a great day!

Good parents would never allow their child to get involved with Hollywood.

What? Loonytunes Tommy is the one who dragged her into that. She handled it quite well I think.

Maybe I wasn’t clear; I’m sorry.

I didn’t say the two were related: my observation came merely from her own admission at that time that she needed heavy-duty anti-depression medication to be able to cope with her parenting duties due to the PPD, which has a real impact on parenting skills. I certainly don’t support or have any sympathy for LoonyToons Tommy’s position, but it now appears that she is taking the (opposite) position from before in suggesting that “all” you need to raise children in Hollyweird’s climate is a firm parental hand, and her boast that that is what she is doing, when before she admitted that even she needed outside help.

Plus, it bothers me that NOBODY in this story is acknowleging the importance of a father figure. It’s all about mothers, blame, shame, or credit.

Just to give some context to your manly advice: Brooke Shields' mother had her daughter pose nude for Playboy at the age of 10.

If you don't think that sort of thing affects a person for the rest of her life, you're nuts.

Yes, individuals need to get out of the holes in their own lives. But they can't always do that alone.

And the individuals' parents are the ones who determine the depth of the hole, and the amount of dirt piled on top. Some people cannot dig themselves out of the holes others put them into.

I agree that fathers are extremely important for children to be healthy and successful - and you’re right, that’s rarely mentioned in the mainstream media.

However, I still don’t see any contraction in Brooke Shields’ saying that parents are a major factor in whether their daughters turn out to be drug-addicted sluts, and her taking an antidepressant when she was depressed. In fact, they go together: parents need to be mentally healthy in order to rear mentally healthy children.

Agree. Ultimately, the individual has the choice, regardless of circumstance.

“Single parenthood” has practically become the norm in this country. And that’s a shame.

I’ve never been a fan but I admire Shields for recognizing the need for help & seeking it.

I haven’t been interested in the movies and TV series Brooke Shields has been in, but I read her book about her experience with Post-partum Depression. She seemed to be intelligent and likeable, in many ways.

I thought the fuss over her antidepressants was silly. (Of course, Tom Cruise is silly, in a distinctly creepy way ...) Mental health problems are complex, and different treatments help different people.

Brooke’s mother was a strange bird, but she deserves plenty of credit for raising Brooke to be a civilized and responsible young woman. Not easy to do that and the Hollywood trip at the same time.

Indeed, Britney, Paris, Lindsay, Nicole- they all seem to have been brought up by ‘yes-yes’ parents.
Combined with all their assistants, handlers, and other enablers-
these ‘It Girls’ are disabled.

I agree. There are also a few former child stars that were mature enough to leave Hollyweird behind for a normal life.

One example is Michael Burns (of Wagon Train and was a teen idol back in the 1960’s) was one. He was a college professor for over 20 years. There were also a couple of kids from "Leave It To Beaver" that went into other professions as well.

Brooke’s mother was pretty strict, and seems to have sheltered Brooke while she was a child star. Brooke’s right about the rest of them. They were left to fend for themselves. I blame the parents for 95% of their problems. It will take these kids at least a decade of adult life to sort out their problems, if they ever do. As the twig is bent, so grows the tree.

What I wonder is if Lohan will survive the next decade.

Brook is correct but these sluts are a little to old and a little too late to repent. They will be old untalented whores and hopefully, not that I care, they will have invested the money that for some reason they earned without talent.
