Red Sox sultan Tom Werner broke Katie Courics heart when he dumped her via e-mail - a blow the CBS anchorgal never fully recovered from, according to a new book.
Katie was upset that Tom didnt have the nerve to break up with her in person - or even over the phone, a close source told Edward Klein, the author of Katie: The Real Story. It was embarrassing and humiliating for her.
Klein, who has written a series of sensational bios of prominent celebs including Hillary Clinton, the Kennedys and Jackie O. - and who writes Parade maggies popular Personality Parade under the pen name Walter Scott - takes on Courics rise to the top in his latest tome.
The book, which details Katies early days at CNN, her 15-year run on NBCs Today show and her crash-landing at CBS, expends much ink detailing her on-again, off-again romance with Werner, the Hollywood mogul behind a string of successful sitcoms including The Cosby Show and That 70s Show.
The two met in 2000 on a blind date arranged by Katies agent. At the time, Werner and his wife, Jill, had just separated and Forbes maggie estimated his net worth at some $600 million.
The couple tried to keep the romance on the down low, but two months after their first date someone tipped off the paparazzi that the lovers were planning a matinee at the fab Four Seasons in New York City. A reporter for a supermarket tabloid checked into the room next door.
While Katie was usually discreet she appeared to throw caution to the wind during her brief afternoon rendezvous, Klein writes. According to the tabloid reporter . . . he couldnt help but hear the lovers through the hotel wall.
Three months later, Klein says, Werner filed for divorce.
To many of his friends, it looked as though he was setting the stage to marry Katie Couric, the book says.
Part of the intense mutual attraction, according to Klein, was Werners ability to help Katie advance her career, and for a long time the couple discussed possible projects they could do together - everything from an Oprah-like talk show to a sitcom starring Katie.
They also discussed an off-screen partnership and in the spring of 2002 decided to try the Brady Bunch thing and bring their kids - Katies daughters Ellie, then 11, and Carrie, then 7, and Toms 15-year-old Amanda - on a Hawaiian vacation with them. It didnt go well.
The girls made it clear they were less than thrilled at the prospect of accepting Katie and Tom as step-parents, the book says. As for the adults, they discovered that a week in the company of unhappy children did not have the same charm as a few passionate hours alone in a hotel room.
(snip)
But the two did get back together one last time - when CBS was considering Katie for the anchor chair. Werner, the book says, acted as Courics rabbi with the CBS suits and ultimately she won the job - only to be devastated by bad ratings and pitiless press.
Since the 2005 Werner bust-up, Couric has been linked to several new guys including, most recently, entrepreneur Brooks Perlin, who, at 33, is 17 years younger than the news queen. Tom has been mostly solo.

Sky-rockets in flight...afternoon delight!

Then there were the ratings.
Red Sox bigwigs Tom "Mr. Couric" Werner, John Henry, and Theo Epstein pose with their choice for prez. Stick to baseball, fellers.
I don't understand how a grown woman gives her body over and over again to a man without marriage (even when he is married to someone else) and then the woman can not understand why the man has no respect for her. Katie isn't the brightest light bulb in the box.
Fixed it.
Hardee-har-har.
He was always decent to me, though.
This just in,
"it isn't you it's me"
The anchor chairs and many anchorette positions are now going to YOUNG WOMEN. katie ought to prepare for retirement or a "change" to perhaps being a pundit on some meaningless political show like Rather.
Perky Days?
Viet Nam...I was there...it's over that way...really.
