Greg Norman's £50m divorce deal leaves him free to marry Chris Evert Last updated at 11:00am on 8th September 2007

Greg Norman may be about to marry Chris Evert after reportedly agreeing a divorce settlement worth more than £50 million.

The 52-year old Australian golf legend, who is said to be worth £250 million, ended his 26-year marriage after months of legal wrangling over money.

Asked if he would now be marrying former tennis champion Miss Evert, Norman replied: "Sure, why not?"

The golfer known as the Great White Shark went public with his new relationship after being seen dining with Miss Evert in Sydney in December.

The 52-year-old American tennis star, who won 18 grand slam singles titles and is thought to be worth £15 million, had just divorced ex-Olympic ski champion Andy Mill after 18 years of marriage.

She was previously married to British tennis star John Lloyd. Mr Mill and Miss Evert, who have three sons, had been close to the Normans.

American Mr Mill, 53, who considered Norman his "best friend", was heartbroken by his betrayal, saying: "A year and a half ago I'd have taken a bullet for this guy. I didn't realise he was going to pull the trigger."

Leaving the court in Stuart, Florida, a smiling Norman said he was "happy to move on" but expressed regret "that the situation turned out the way it did", referring to the increasingly acrimonious proceedings.

Before flying off to be with Miss Evert at the U.S. Tennis Open in New York, he added: "We wanted to keep it as amicable as possible. It's kind of sad. It hurts a lot of people."

His wife Laura, with whom he has two grown-up children, cut a lonely figure as she left the court in tears.

The divorce is likely to be signed off in days but the former air hostess is still demanding another £500,000 because of delays in signing the confidential agreement.

She is expected to get the proceeds-from the sale of the couple's £5 million mansion on Jupiter Island, Florida, as well as a cash payment.

Norman, who was the world's top golfer for 331 weeks between 1986 and 1998 and won two Open Championships, filed for divorce last year over "irreconcilable differences".

In court, he said he had been more than generous to his wife.

A statement filed by his lawyers said: "The wife did not teach the husband to swing a golf club.

"The wife did not teach the husband to win."

Cut down on the Zin

whoa...them's fightin' words, young man :)

I WILL, however, commit to staying with hubby #1 (going on 17 yrs...although there are certainly times i introduce him to people as 'my first husband'...ha ha ha)....this story just breaks my heart...especially the line about Norman's wife looking so lonely leaving the courthouse.

There was once a time when adultery was nothing to be proud of. I lost any respect I had for Chris Evert.

Actually, I’m a chick (but no longer a spring chick). That’s funny—hubby #1. Yeah, it’s a shame their long marriages had to end like that. I feel bad for both spouses left behind, especially Chris’ ex who was best friends with Norman. How rotten!

Actually is was Absolut on the rocks - six ounce 'doubles', and normally about ten of em when I was doin some 'serious' drinking (I even had my own bar stool).

HOWEVER, when I was purposely staying out late with old friends I went to rum and coke and three max a night (didn't want to be cop bait). And the women still looked better than she does now.

When I drank 'serious' I didn't drive, the wife or a business associate - friend did. But I no longer imbibe, haven't in yeeeears now - and my liver thanks me.)

Fifty million pounds for Chris Evert.

Further proof that sex is the dumbest force in the Universe.

Out with old friends. On Friday nights their wives let them out (boys night out) and we'd hit various Lounges in the NW burbs of Chicago (excpet for one year a joint in a SW burb was 'hot').

They'd do a little dancing and some innocent flirting. I mostly sat and watched - and beat women off with a stick ;-)

Yeah I guess.
I'm surprised they (Tennis Pros and Golfers) don't get skin cancer.

(which I am PARANOID of now after a 1st cousin died two years ago from it.)

I am sure they DO get skin cancer or pre cancers. My blond and blue eyed husband age 72, who spent a life time in the sun, has a standing appointment every 2 months with the dermatologist. When they first started showing up they were burned off but now they have to be cut off and biopsied. so far so good, no melanoma yet.
