Windows 98 has finally fallen below the current Linux? My big question is why do people still run Windows 98?

I love how Linux has “always been just around the corner” for almost a decade.

Recent statistics released by W3Counter reveal that the market share of Windows 98 fell from 1.44 percent to 1.34 percent in August, reducing it to the same level of popularity as the open source Linux operating system, which saw its market share increase from 1.33 to 1.34 in the same period.

It's like comparing the neck-and-neck competetion between the Libertarian and Constitution parties....

That is desktop share, not server share, where Linux is much stronger.

It seems to me a very odd distribution of hits with respect to countries (Latvia has 4% of the hits, Turkey's presence in the top 10, and Japan and Korea are nowhere on the list, all of which strike me as odd):

  1. United States 30.40%
  2. Germany 7.52%
  3. United Kingdom 5.99%
  4. Latvia 4.05%
  5. Canada 3.41%
  6. France 3.09%
  7. Netherlands 3.00%
  8. Turkey 2.48%
  9. Australia 2.44%
  10. China 2.11%

That list of countries makes me wonder exactly what 5,722 websites are being monitored by "W3Counter".
