Dogs On the Brink of Being Put Down
Spaulding Griffin Georgia Animal Shelter ^ | 10/06/07 | Pinkbell

Posted on 10/06/2007 1:38:11 PM PDT by Pinkbell

I just wanted to post this because I know there are some pet owners like myself on FR. I was looking at the Petfinder Urgents List today, and this list of dogs has been posted several times. These dogs are in danger of being put to sleep Monday morning if no one adopts or rescues them. It seems no one has taken them yet. If you are interested, or know anyone that is interested, please click the link at the top, and check out the dogs available for adoption. A fax and phone number is provided so you can contact the shelter in an effort to save these dogs. These really are beautiful dogs, and it would be sad to see them put down.

Thanks.

I have eleven dogs, five of which are in the house, and my husband would have me committed if I adopted another right now.

But what I can do is pray that the Good Lord will allow a few hearts to be led toward adoption and bump your thread to assist in the effort!

My best wishes to all of the doggies! Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Most shelters require people to have their pet spayed or neutered now. Rescues will often do it before they adopt out, but not all shelters and rescues do. It’s good to do this because there are already excessive amounts of animals in shelters that are getting put down.

I’m not sure if there is a Georgia ping list. I’ll put in the keyword Georgia and see.

All I can do is pray too. We have 4 dogs and 2 cats in a small home. We are unable to take anymore. We’re at our limit. Looking at those dogs just breaks my heart. I wish I could take at least one of them. It sounds like you have your hands full too. We have our hands full with 4 dogs. I can’t imagine eleven.

Last dog I adopted from a shelter, turned out to be a killer.

And, as it happens, the shelter knew it - they were so focused on placing that dog, they wrote off the risk to the adoptive parents.

I had to kill the dog. And you would not believe how much I cried, when I killed her. She was an amazing creature. Blue-eyed husky, vociferous, smart as all heck. She could climb fences, prowl farms, and kill anything that moved.

No, thanks. I bought my current dog from a breeder.

I don't think you can put states in topics in Chat.

I’m sorry about your experience. They say in this contract that you are to give the dog back if you no longer want it, “I further agree that I will not sell, trade, give away, or dispose of said animal in any way, but will return it to Spalding County, Georgia. if at any time I desire to relinquish custody.” The shelter should not have sold her to you without at least telling you. Some shelters genuinely don’t know because they have so many animals to take care of, but it sounds like the shelter you adopted from knew and didn’t tell you.

The rescue I used to volunteer for would generally foster the dogs at their house during the week (Saturday and Sunday were adoption days). They could tell people any problems the dog had, as it would be at their house all week around other animals and their family.

We have a husky/shepherd mix. She lives downstairs in our house because she’ll fight with our other dogs and kill our cats. It took months for our JRT (from a shelter) to be trained to be around our cats without hurting them. We likes our cats, but he’ll still chase other cats. He doesn’t care for big dogs either. Neither our husky/shepherd or JRT can be trusted around deer, bunnies, birds, that sort of stuff. I think that’s true of a lot of dogs, though.

May I just ask did your Husky try to go after other people, or was it strictly animals?

I understand going to a breeder after your experience. I wouldn’t write off all dogs in shelters, though. You can also go to rescues where they foster like I mentioned above, and they can tell you more about the animal’s character if you are ever interested in adopting again.

While I think it's unfair to ping a nationwide list to a very local problem, this might be a good way to let you know to check your local shelter. Lots of good hearts there waiting for a home, and sadly, many never get that chance.

Ping!

We have laws against animal abuse, but it is abuse to allow dogs to breed and produce unwanted litters of puppies.

Thank you HOTD for the ping. Our newspaper puts photos in each week of pets that need adopting. It breaks my heart to look at them.
