I can relate to that. As a young sailor (18 yo), I went on liberty in Mobile, Ala. Drank it without a mix or chaser. Needless to say my impending doom and a severe hangover. To this day, I cannot stand the smell of Gin.

I was 17 and drank a fifth at an underage party. Hallucinated. Fortunately one of the girls was daughter to a nurse and knew what to do. Like you, I can’t stand to be within smelling distance of the stuff.
