No Slingshots at Scene of Tiger Attack
Jan. 2, 2008
Police today flatly denied a report that the three victims of the Christmas Day tiger mauling at the San Francisco Zoo were carrying slingshots on the day of the attack, which claimed the life of a 17-year-old zoo visitor.
The denial follows a report that appeared in the New York Post and cited an unnamed police source who made the slingshot claim about Carlos Sousa Jr. and brothers Paul and Kulbir Dhaliwal. Sousa was killed in the attack.

The animals rights wacko’s will now dream up a new line.
Well I guess that shows the importance of waiting for rumors to be substantiated.
Maybe it was a laser, like was used to assassinate Bhutto; so reports claim...
Can you say Richard Jewel?
Maybe the guys laughed & called them names.
Did they check the monkey cages for the slingshots? Never trust a monkey.
A witness yesterday came forward and stated that she saw the brothers ‘roaring’ at the tiger, but not tormenting it.
How many people yell “Kaw, Kaw” at the eagle?
The fact of the matter is that people do stupid things around zoo animals and zoo officials know this. Face it, SF: the lion cage was built in 1948, did not meet current safety standards, the fence was several feet lower than officials claimed and than required by safety standards, and, worst of all, apparently other patrons had complained that the tigers had managed to get across the moat at various times in the past (although the tigers hadn’t leaped over the fence, probably at least in one case because a woman screamed and lunged towards them to protect her child).
Also, why was there no keeper around the tiger cage at closing time? All that seems to have been in the zoo were a few hapless patrons. Doesn’t the zoo have any employees? And don’t they have any weapons or even tranquilizer guns?
Exactly. I see people roaring at the lions & tigers all the time when I go to the zoo. They do monkey impersonations too. The tiger got out because it was able to escape. That is the zoos fault.
The first employee to be notified of the attack went back and forth between the cafe and the attack for 20 minutes driving her golf cart. Other employees were unable to find someone with a tranquilizer gun. Once they did, zoo employees kept police outside the gates for six minutes while zoo security unsuccessfully tried to tranquilize the animal attacking the brother.
Explain the victims refusal to cooperate with authorities. That is what raised questions in the first place. Besides, it’s San Francisco-I’ve seen the police chief- a competent investigation?
It seems that these brothers have been fighting a sophisticated disinformation campaign from the beginning.
Remember the reports about them "dangling a leg" over the wall and finding a shoe in the moat?
This is the third time the brothers were falsely accused by someone at the zoo or in the police department.
If they had problems with the police before, I can undestand why they didn’t trust them enough to talk.
My son recently was with a friend who shoplifted something from a grocery store.
A detective called me from my son’s school and asked if he could ask him questions. He stated that my son was seen on camera in another isle when it happened and was not under suspicion for stealing anything.
I told the detective that he could NOT interview my son unless I was there. I found out later that the detective would have pressed charges against both boys and was simply looking for any way to make any statement from the boys match his preconceived idea that both boys were involved.
Yep, and the bench/board that put down to allow the tiger to escape...the gang initiation...the drunken tormenting... You can’t make it up.
Oh wait.....
Good grief. Even for SF, that’s pretty dysfunctional.
I can see some distrust of police, but when you’ve been lacerated by the claws and or chewed on by a large animal, the “No snitch” ghetto stance seems like an odd route to take. Who knows though, maybe there was a cheetah or something giving them threatening gang signs while they laid there bleeding. Strange.
No, the kangaroo's have them hid in their pouch! They work for nuts.
Did they check the monkey cages for the slingshots? Never trust a monkey.
Not talking to a cop is a constitutional right, the last I heard.
