According to court records, prosecutors were preparing a criminal case against Jasmine Nguyen and had met with the 15-year-old to inform him about testifying before a grand jury.

"He expressed reluctance to participate by testifying against Hanh Nguyen because he loved her and wanted to spend his life with her," wrote prosecutor Greg Moawad in a court document.

The teenager was scheduled to testify on Dec. 7. By then, police say, he had run off with the older woman and the woman's husband and her teenage daughter. The boy's mother, who reported him missing to police, told authorities he had asked for his passport before he left home.
