I saw Obama in a hotel lobby in Providence in November, 2006, and he was surrounded by a bunch of goons who suspiciously resembled the Fruits of Islam (or whatever those toughs are called). I saw Obama speak at a rally in Iowa (consider it a recon mission) and saw no evidence of any such 'goons'.
Secret Service agents, on the other hand, were very obviously in attendance.
