BEIJING -- A man running from a western Michigan store with stolen hunting knives hidden in his pants tripped, fell and stabbed himself in the stomach, police say.

The suspect was hospitalized after Monday night's attempted theft from a Meijer Inc. superstore in the US city of Grand Rapids and is expected to face a misdemeanor shoplifting charge, police say.

"The man was taken to the hospital," said Meijer spokesman Frank Giuliano. "We are cooperating with the investigation by police."

The wounds did not appear to be life-threatening, The Grand Rapids Press reported.

The man had put about 300 US dollars worth of hunting knives in his waistband, police told WZZM-TV. Police say he tried to leave the store, but Meijer employees confronted him and a scuffle followed.

The man then fell and was stabbed by the knives he had hidden in his clothing, police said.

"I saw a man laying down on the mat by the carts, a knife by him with blood on the full blade of the knife," shopper Heather Dodd told WOOD-TV. "It was not a dull kitchen knife or a sharp butcher's knife, it was somewhere in between.

"Someone was holding him down so I just walked around him, grabbed my cart, made sure everything was OK and got out of the way."

We had an incident like that here in Indy. A guy went into a store and tried to rob the owner at knife point. He was shot dead at the scene. It was a gun store.

There are more Darwin award winners out there than you think.

Lucky for him he didn't try to steal a Daisy "Red Ryder" BB gun.

He would have shot his eye out.

“A man running from a western Michigan store with stolen hunting knives hidden in his pants tripped, fell and stabbed himself in the stomach, police say.”

Now wait a darn minute! Was there a warning statement on the knife blades stating “do not run while carrying this knife”? Huh, huh? Personally, I think he should sue the socks off of the knife manuacturer....

I was thinking the same thing...

The grammar appears to be fairly amature in the way it flows as the story is written...

If this kind of story makes it to China, well there is no telling what else is spun over there...hehehe

Sad to say, but I bet the store gets sued.

He was cut while in a scuffle with security. Meijer yesterday was questioned by reporters about store policy of confronting shoplifters.

There was a story recently about Home Depot firing an employee for tackling a shoplifter.

No doubt, civil liability is a factor for these policies.

Suing the store was the first thing I thought he’d do, and was surprised to go through the thread and not seeing it mentioned. Thankfully in the post #15 you covered the topic and returned the thread back to the reality (not sure if I need to put /s here).

Knife theft suspect to face charges

Wednesday, January 09, 2008

By Theresa D. Mcclellan
The Grand Rapids Press

GRAND RAPIDS -- A man who suffered stab wounds while allegedly fleeing a Meijer store with $300 worth of stolen knives could be arraigned on an unarmed robbery charge as soon as today, police said.

Jeremy Parker, 21, was discharged Tuesday from Spectrum Health Butterworth Campus, where he was treated for cuts to his abdomen after Monday's incident at the Knapp's Corner Meijer.

Grand Rapids Police Lt. Paul Warwick said an arrest warrant was issued for the Comstock Park man on the misdemeanor charge.

The incident occurred about 5:40 p.m. Monday near the store's north entrance. However, police and a spokesman for the retailer differ in their accounts of how the suspect was injured.

Grand Rapids police said there was a scuffle between Meijer employees and the suspect before the man was injured. Warwick said the man was stabbed in the abdomen by one of the knives.

"He had a number of them, all different types, but they weren't kitchen-type knives," Warwick said. Other police personnel described them as hunting knives.

But Frank Guglielmi, director of public relations for Meijer, said he was not aware of any physical confrontation between store workers and the suspect. He said the suspect fell, causing the injury.

"They approached him to apprehend him and he ran and fell," Guglielmi said, declining to say whether the store employees who went after the suspect were security workers.

"Once he fell, that was the point he was injured," Guglielmi said.

He said there is specific protocol for dealing with suspected shoplifters but only would say that Meijer workers are told to "approach."

"When our people see someone shoplifting, they approach. When they approached, he tripped," Guglielmi said.
