What Happens To Delegates When A Candidate Drops Out
self

Posted on 01/10/2008 8:03:54 PM PST by festus

What happens to the delegates a candidate has collected in the various primaries and caucuses when they drop out before the convention ?

I have been searching all over and cannot really find an explanation about this.

Do the delegates get to choose who they want to vote for ? Does the resigning candidates endorsement of another candidate impact that decision ? Does they go to the 2nd place winner in the state etc ?

I'm sure it varies by state etc.

How does this work ?

TOPICS: Miscellaneous
KEYWORDS: candidate; delegates; gopconvention; resigns
If this is answered elsewhere please point me there.

Thanks.

Dunno, it’s been a long time since we have had to worry about it.

I am pretty sure they still get to go and vote.

CNN.com -

Pledged delegates are 'bound' to vote for a specific presidential preference at the national convention, for at least the first ballot. Usually they are 'bound' by the results of the state's presidential primary, or by the preferences of those attending their caucus/state convention system.

I had the wrong source - it is Associated Press at aol.com. AOL and CNN are owned by the same company, but the information in the article about pledged delegates seems to be correct.

Yes. Some of the various state rules may be available here -

Look for the state abbrevations links under the nominating process columns. Those pages for each state may have links to their local rules.
