CA: January storms pile up snow in Sierra, survey finds

ECHO SUMMIT, Calif. (Map, News) - A month of relentless storms has left the Sierra snowpack well above its average depth, a welcome change from last year's dry winter and a positive sign for summertime water deliveries to farms and cities.

In the northern Sierra Nevada, just south of Lake Tahoe, the state Department of Water Resources measured the snow Thursday at 73.1 inches deep. That's 123 percent of what is typically expected this time of year.

The average snowpack along the entire 400-mile-long range was 111 percent of normal, well above the amount measured during the first seasonal snow survey earlier this month.

Since then, California has been hit with a series of storms that swelled rivers, led to fatal avalanches and downed power lines.

Last May, the Sierra snowpack was just 29 percent of normal, the lowest since 1988.

Here in SF we are at 115% of normal rainfall with no end in sight to the storms and 2-3 months left in the rainy season.

I’m at the 2,500 ft. elevation. Our 6th snowfall this year. My second day this week of NOT going into the office because there’s too much snow to cope with.

Have they sent FEMA in yet to aid you in this emergency? /sarcasm

In the future, please try and remember that the California weather is not necessarily front page news.

Thanks.

And if one more person says... “We really need the rain”... I’m going to hit them over the head with my umbrella.

Ever since the beginning of January when we had that storm that severely damaged two backyard fences at my house, we’ve rarely seen sunshine here in Sacramento!
