Alabama wins recruiting national title
Rivals.com ^ | Feb 6th, 2008 | Jeremy Crabtree

The Tide came rolling in on National Signing Day. After an impressive flurry of commitments in the past 48 hours, and thanks to a solid recruiting foundation that was laid in the spring and summer, Alabama has been crowned by Rivals.com as the recruiting national champions for the class of 2008.

The Crimson Tide finished with an amazing run in Nick Saban's second recruiting class in Tuscaloosa. Saban and his staff landed three five-star players and 18 four-star recruits, giving them enough of a push to edge Notre Dame and SEC rival Florida.

As of 3 p.m. EST, the Tide was sitting with 2,819 points, just ahead of Notre Dame, Florida, Oklahoma and Georgia. The rest of the Rivals.com top 10 consisted of Miami at No. 6, Florida State at No. 7, Ohio State at No. 8, Michigan at No. 9 and USC at No. 10.

There are several uncommitted players who could cause some shifts in the top-10, but nobody has enough left on the board to knock the Tide from their perch.

THE TOP 10

1. Alabama 2. Notre Dame 3. Florida 4. Oklahoma 5. Georgia 6. Miami 7. Florida State 8. Ohio State 9. Michigan 10. USC

Look who’s #17!!!

The University of Minnesota! My alma mater!

Coach Brewster also picked up some decent JUCO transfers.

I’m not saying that we’re gonna go to the Rose Bowl this year - but a .500 season would be nice.

Maybe at the minimum we could bring back Floyd of Rosedale of Paul Bunyan’s Axe.

ATH = Athlete, ie: someone who is fast, big, and is capable of playing multiple positions on both offense and defense.

Here's a link to a list of the recruits that were offered scholarships by both Auburn and Alabama, and where they eventually signed.

Happy to let you know Connecticut did well in recruiting for the 2008 college football season. :)

"They signed 33. They must expect a lot to not qualify."

I asked Hubby the same question. One will go on a Bryant Scholarship and 2 are backcounted from last year. One of the brothers will go to Jr college to see if he can get his grades up. There's a thread re: the question at tidefans.com in the Recruiting forum that should explain the rest. :)

I'm a Bama fan but I'd love to have an UGA dog! So cute! I don't know my breeds that well... is he/she an American Bulldog?

Check back when you figure out how to beat UL-Monroe. No such thing as a “recruiting title”.

Congrats to all of the successful recruiters.

#1 - Very subjective...High School players often develop remarkably or don't.

#2 - A program may not have a need for a player ranked #1 at his position but may have a great need for a player ranked #5 at his position...which position is more important in general and to that program in particular?

This is a great hype and fun but it won't influence my bets to any great extent....

#3 - What if the program with the #11 recruiting class this year has the #1 recruiting class next year...LSU has needs but as many as which other team?

#4 - (Non Sequiter) How many NFL teams with only one loss didn't win the NFL Championship and how many college teams with 2 losses have won the BCS Championship twice?

Rivals had them number one, but others did not. ESPN had them at 9. It’s a great class for them, regardless. And while Auburn had a nice top 20 class, we’re still disappointed in it after the string of top 10 classes Tommy Tuberville has had. No question that Saban’s staff outworked and outsold Tuberville’s this year.

Looking at the SEC, man, what a monstrous conference. In the state of Alabama alone, you had two top twenty classes. Georgia had a top 5 class, Florida had a top 5 class, and LSU had a top 10 class. These schools are all within hours of each other. Wow.

Not really. Houston Nutt is a good closer.

You must be joking.
