[history]
February 13, 2008 -- A man went berserk at an Upper East Side psychologist's office last night, hacking her to death with a meat cleaver and critically injuring another doctor who ran to her aid when he heard her blood-curdling screams, police said.

"He looked like a psycho," said a local doorman Is he qualified to render such a diagnosis?
To: Dysart
The attacker - who police speculated may have been a patient ...Gosh, you think?
How sad for the doctors and their families.

“He looked like a psycho,” said a local doorman.
Way to man the ramparts, Doorman.
To: ClearCase_guy; y'all
This is the stuff of slasher flicks. I suppose it’s a risk inherent in dealing with sometimes deeply deranged clientele. On another note, I’d have hoped the doorman would have been a little more discerning and forewarning of an apparent ‘psycho’ breaching the premises.
Hope he’s not expecting a tip.

So, the local doorman viewed this guy as being psychotic, and just let him in? No phone call of concern to the Doctor or security or police? Wow. Great doorman.

It's an awful story and my heart goes out to the family of the poor victim. But, being the New York Post, I expected a more creative (if utterly tasteless) headline. I think you just supplied one. ("Leave it to Cleaver" - yikes!).

We need Knife Control. Now. They already have some. Most places do, even Texas (can't carry a Bowie knife, which might as well be a cleaver, for example. You can own one though, and having it in your office would be OK ).
But now they'll be instituting Cleaver Control.

What was a meat cleaver doing in a small office kitchen? Meat cleavers should only be available to licensed butchers after they have undergone a thorough background check. All sales of meat cleavers should be done thru regulated dealers -- "loopholes" involving butcher-to-butcher sales must be eliminated.

Pyschiatrists and pyschologists ought to sign a waiver of the doctor/patient privilege if they are murdered in their wills and living wills. Seriously.
