No more Knuts! Polar bear proliferation is completely out of control in Germany. First there was Knut at the Berlin Zoo, then Flocke at the Tiergarten Nuernberg and now Wilbaer and his dangling tongue at the Wilhelma Zoo in Stuttgart. God help us.
On her last limb: Allison, an Atlantic Green sea turtle missing three of her four flippers, swims in a holding tank at Sea Turtle Inc. in South Padre Island, Texas. Tourists found her two years ago and brought her to the hospital, which wants to make her the first sea turtle fitted with a prosthetic flipper before returning her to the wild.
New leopard spotted: Marwell Zoological Park in Winchester, England, is on full whisker alert as Ascha's cub gets her first breath of fresh air after three months in her mother's den. Mom and cub are among about 200 Amur leopards in captivity. There are less than 35 in the wild.
Screech therapy: One minute this neotropical screech owlet is happily hooting in its tree nest, the next it's on the ground amid pieces of rotted branch. Fortunately somebody scooped up the baby and took it to the Endangered Wildlife Rescue Center near Alajuela, Costa Rica, where it has become quite attached to a lump of wood.
Poor cat....the indignity of it all!!
The star-spangled bunker: On George Washington's birthday, Spc. Evan Shisler hangs American flags on a barrier inside Lion's Den patrol base at Radwaniyah, Iraq.
