A long time ago I took a brief course in Tae Kwan Do and there was a Korean flag on the wall "to indicate the source of the tradition of the form we were studying". Class was begun with everyone kneeling facing the flag. We weren't required to pledge allegiance to that flag nor to put it above our own, just to show respect.

I equated it with bowing before stepping onto the mat in a different discipline--to show respect for the martial art and the long chain of those who developed it.

The only exception allowed was for a guy named Omar and he was excused because it was against his religion (unspecified) to show respect to any flag for any reason.

He is a dangerous individual who is evasive and stealthy.
