Columbia (WLTX) -- Governor Mark Sanford says South Carolina will not comply with the federally mandated Real ID.
Sanford's Response
This is a requirement that would make the state issue new driver's licenses that would meet federal security demands.
Sanford shared an open letter to Michael Chertoff, asking the U.S. Homeland Security Secretary to give South Carolina the same treatment as other states, who are asking for a Real ID extension.
Sanford says he's not opting for an extension, because South Carolina laws passed last year prohibit it.
The letter also says that South Carolina drivers licence requirements already meet many of the requirements of the Real ID, and are more secure than most state drivers licenses.
Sanford also says a change would result in increased wait times at the Department of Motor Vehicles.
Without the extension, anyone with a South Carolina license would have to go through extra security checks to enter a federal building or board a plane after May 11.
Homeland Security pushed for a new law called Real ID to make driver's licenses more secure following the September 11 terror attacks.
I am a proud South Carolinian today! Gov. Sanford is a fiscal conservative who does not put up with any nonsense.
In fact, when protesting pork, he took real pigs into the state house.
Has anyone working for the South Carolina state driver’s license bureau ever been caught knowing selling legit IDs to people with false documentation?
There are many spoiled apples working for the government and the reason a driver’s license is not valid information to board an airplane.
I think McCain might be considering him as a VP, because Sanford would kick McCain's butt if he ran against him for President.
You can thank Jorge Bush for that one with his let all the illegals in attitude.
