Stuart Brown describes Norbert Rosing's striking images of a wild polar bear coming upon tethered sled dogs in the wilds of Canada 's Hudson Bay:

The photographer was sure that he was going to see the end of his dogs when the polar bear wandered in, but

The Polar Bear returned every night that week to play with the dogs.

I was stationed on the DEW Line in '69. I traveled the entire length from Alaska to Greenland and saw several Polar Bears. They were cute, cuddly and these pictures show the playful side of these creatures. The live on fish and seals and would see sled dogs as companions.
Cute huh?

That’s completely out of character for that bear. Was the photographer holding his gun in one hand and the camera in the other?

Wow! I’m glad it did not harm the dogs! Luckily it was not hungry. Probably just ate fifty baby seals. Burp!

Maybe they saw the sled dogs as odd-looking baby polar bears? In any case, the last photo shows that the bear let the dog win the play fight, cause animals generally don’t expose vulnerable areas like their bellies or throats if they’re not playing or expressing submission.

Bears can be quite friendly and playful, though I'd never want to get close to one. I remember seeing photos of a grisly bear in a zoo or refuge that was being visited by a cat, and they were great friends.

Of course, it could be bear hormones.
