LOS ANGELES - Teo Macero, a producer of jazz albums in the 1960s and 1970s who helped to define the recorded sound of artists such as Miles Davis, died Feb. 19 at a hospital in Riverhead, N.Y. He was 82.

The thousands of recordings produced by Mr. Macero include the original cast album of "Chorus Line," Simon and Garfunkel's album "The Graduate," and numerous gold records.
Beginning with his work at Columbia Records in the mid-1950s, Mr. Macero helped make some of the most enduring jazz recordings of the era. He was musical editor for Duke Ellington, pianist Thelonious Monk, and bassist Charles Mingus.

He was generous and took the time to talk to a young college jazz DJ. When I first interviewed him he told me he could only spare forty-five minutes of his time to talk to me. Our interview went on for almost three hours. I will never forget the stories he told me about producing Dave Brubeck, Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, and Thelonious Monk. He was an icon of jazz history. He was also a closet conservative in the music industry.

sorry, the actual year of birth was 1925.
I just don't understand how he could engineer something as perfect as In A Silent Way and something as unlistenable as Monk's Blues. Maybe it's just me.
His work with Mingus was crazy, visionary and wonderful.
He will definitely be missed. An American original.

Monk’s Blues was a comprimise. Originally, Columbia wanted Monk to do an album of Beatles tunes. Teo was acting as the inbetween for Monk and Columbia. I blame Oliver Nelson for Monk’s Blues.

I talked to his wife once on the phone. I think I met his son once, but I can’t remember. He was a very private man.
