I’ve never heard an encore at the Met either.

Are there ever encores in European opera theaters?

On that google page, further down, Toscannini banned encores back in 1921.

Europe yes. The annoucers couldn't recall an encore at the Met by a soloist, but now there's a guy talking who says that Pavarotti took an encore once in Tosca. (But never when I was there, I assure you.)
