I Just installed XP3. System seems okay.
Are you logged in?.........
I’m in the shower. Report to me again when I get out.
Been running it for a while now. Performance increase of around 10%. Good service pack. Very happy with it.
Sounds huge to me.
Nope, it is automatic now.:)
bfl
I wonder if it would bring XP any closer to my Ubuntu installation (dual boot). Now that would be impressive.
THAILAND?
Oh, the hugh manatee!!!
I tried several times last week to install SP3. It would get about 2/3 of the way. Then, I would get an error pop-up box with “access denied”.
It didn’t give any additional information.
I even tried installing in ‘safe mode’ and got the same error.
Probably not... but running XP in a VM under Ubuntu might.
;-)
access denied.....are you running Firefox?.......
Hope you upgraded your beeber.
I just got a new Dell laptop with Vista and I hate it. Will XP3 help me?
Yeah, I got one of those little gold shields down in my toolbar last night. I clicked on it and a popup asked me if I wanted to download the SP3 updates and when I clicked download, the popup disappeared and nothing else happened. No download. But at least that little gold shield is gone again!
The biggest detriment to Linux is all the versions and all the distros.
They are too confusing for most people to bother with.
What is the different between Gnome and KDE?
[I have tried a few different versions in VWare-type environments and from LiveCD. They seem very basic. So far, none has recognized my Kworld pctv card.]
You mean, Windows XP, SP3!
:^)
That’s probably because you’ve kept XP updated regularly, and your system was in fact, incrementally “updated” to SP3 a long while ago.
Yep, this is the first time it is on the windows update site.
Automatic updates will follow later.
I’m running Crossover, but am not impressed. Quicken runs, but doesn’t do much beyond adding line items. So, when I want to run it I go into Windows. And that’s about the only Windows application I run in Ubuntu.
Since I’m mostly in Ubuntu now, XP’s speed is of little issue. I go to it when needed, then back out. And once I get into XP (SP2) it’s not all that bad; just slow getting into the Desktop. (Yes, I’ve done all the startup maintenance & stuff).
Hmm. I hope so.
Just took at look at Microsoft.com.
LOL
First page: NEW, LOWER PRICING - VISTA Ultimate
[They can’t even give it away.]
Set up a VMWare install of XP under Ubuntu. Save the state of the VM as running. Then it is a matter of just turning the VM on or off. Start up time = virtually nothing.
When I’ve searched for VMWare I’ve found a multitude of applicatons, servers, players, etc. Some are pretty expensive. That’s why I’ve never gotten into it.
Is there a specific application I should be looking at?

While I agree with you on the distro count.. But I myself would not call that a true detriment. Its about choice..I have tried many.. and each has its own good points and bad points.
Gnome is one type of desktop environment.. and KDE is another.. KDE, especially in its latest Version 4 incarnation is more like windows. But it depends on what you want to use.
I myself prefer Linux Mint 4 (Ubuntu based) with the Flubox environment. It works.. it works quickly.. very very little tweaking needed after first install... its free.. and it dose not feed Microsofts coffers while i just do what i need to do..
If the SP has to access MS home website and it uses Firefox to do so, that may be the problem. It seems that MS does not like people who use Firefox instead of Internet Explorer. My old computer here at work would not access ANY MS downloads or updates after I installed Firefox...........
Only if you wipe out Vista and install Windows XP first.

I just got a new Dell laptop....
I think I see your problem.........
I also installed SP3 this morning without a hitch.
I spend a lot of time in front of the computer for work and play and communication and I like the flashier Aero interface. If the flashy interface stuff doesn't do anything for you I recommend sticking with XP.
And I absolutely recommend XP for my customers although the software package I write is OK on Vista.
I may try installing directly from Microsoft, now that they have it up. [The version I previously tried was from MajorGeeks.]
First, I want to make a CloneGenius copy of my partition (in case the install screws up everything).
Then, I will try the new install.
I will try this later. We are having storms, and I don’t want a power glitch in the middle of everything.
I just installed Photoshop CS3 Extended and nobody is safe.
Muuuaaaaaaaa
Thanks for the link.
I downloaded the current version of VMWare Player, but after reading that link you provided, I decided I’m not ready to put my PC in a “Caution” or “Dangerous” position. I’ll just limp along for now.
While I’m up to creating a dual boot situation, I’m not familiar with Linux to run commands without a major infusion of knowledge. That’s one part of Linux I hate.
Again, thanks for the link, but I’m taking the “cautious” way out.
I rolled the dice on the first day, and my XP is good.
Good move.....don’t jeopardize an already hazardous situation.....
You might check a free little program called MobaLiveCD Emulator that I ran across last week.
http://mobalivecd.mobatek.net/en/
It is a standalone that creates a vmware-type block to load any LiveCD ISO.
[Note: It takes a while for an ISO to load, so be patient.]
I have tried it with several Linux LiveCD versions.
“This error message is brought to you by the fine folks at Microsoft, who are just trying to keep their jobs from going overseas.”............
I can run my Live CD now in Windows if I want to. But that’s just an emulation of Ubuntu; not the whole package.
I don’t think I’m ready or prepared to do a virtual anything based on what I read on that link.
Does SP3 support DirectX 10? I heard that microsoft said that they would make DX10 support available for XP.
ROFL! Would you have known that was cryptic if they didn’t tell you? Well at least you know it’s not your fault :P
(BTW, how do you attach a picture?)
I finally was able to dig up a copy of an old graphical plotting application that ran on Windows 95 and was able to get it to run well on Vista. All of the later versions of the app couldn’t get past Vista security to install correctly. It seems odd to go back from version 8.0 to version 4.0 on this app and lose a few features, but at least it works! I’m now looking for more Win95 software that is Vista compatible.
Congratulations, but why do you think we care?
