Uninstall a tool bar (tech)
May 22, 2008

I install the new AVG 8.0 this morning and I now have an AVG tool bar. I don't want it.

I used Revo Uninstaller to uninstall my earlier version of AVG (I think it was 7.51 or something like that). I used the most thorough option on Revo, then rebooted as necessary. Then I installed Avast! and am very happy.

If you want to uninstall an application like AVG, I suggest using Revo. It gets more of the residual stuff than Windows uninstaller. This will help especially if you install a similar application in place of the first one.

AVG just seem to get bloated over time. I’m glad I made the switch.

That's a shame. One of the reason I switched from Norton to AVG ( having used the free version years ago ) was AVG wasn't a drain on the system like Norton became.

Ohhh, I tried that and there were two boxes that needed to be checked.
1) Rename user settings
2) Including objects in the virus vault

I just X'ed out and didn't do anything.

Just reinstall it. Don't check the box for the optional tool bar, and it will go away.

I’ll check out Avast, thanks. It feels like my computer is pulling a Cadillac up the Rockies...very slow.

Have you tried this?

I unchecked it at install and had no problem.

You can re-run the setup and choose to not install the avg toolbar or uninstall and reinstall, only this time do not choose the avg toolbar.

Just reinstall it.

So I go to my Control Panel and uninstall it first then go find the 8.0 free version on line to download again and don't check the box for the optional tool bar?

Uninstall AVG 8 and go through the custom install option.

Be sure to elect out of the toolbar.

I am running Version 8 and have been very pleased.

Yes. Note that you’ll be prompted to do a custom install, or a standard install. You may not see the choice of installing the tool-bar or not unless you choose the custom install.

Or, as others here have suggested, uninstall AVG and replace it with the (also free) Avast! anti-virus program (you’ll find this on CNET Downloads too).

Where might I find AVAST and Revo? Is Revo free or must it be purchased? Thanks.

I clicked on tools and the only thing there concerning add on for AVG was "AVG safe search 8.0

Under that was another AVG but it says...AVG tool bar 2.0.20080418. Is that the one to disable?

I feel your pain. I used free AVG for years, upgraded to the commercial version about three years ago, and when I got my new box I decided to reward them for their years of free service by purchasing 8.0.

Big mistake. Major bloatware. That goldang Yahoo search toolbar is also the only way to control the browser filter from the browser itself; delete it and you have to do that from the control panel. That filter has known incompatibilities with IE7 under Vista - there's a patch I can look up if you need it. Even after installing it the browser freezes up at random when it senses certain old Java content or some Active-X stuff I haven't identified yet. I turned it off.

Same sad story we've seen with Norton/Symantec and McAffee. No simple, sleek AV engine, you're gonna get a suite containing a firewall, browser filters, etc, etc, whether you like it or not.

I made the decision to replace it earlier this week but I haven't identified a replacement yet. I'll be looking at this thread for suggestions. Free isn't important; unobtrusive is. Thanks for posting this.

Not having the toolbar it's hard to walk somebody through the process. I would try to disable that one, remembering what you did so if it causes problems one can always go back and undo it. I think it may be as simple as unchecking it in tools.

I uninstalled it then reinstalled and unchecked AVG tool bar section. SUCCESS AVG Tool bar - gone. Now I’m showing that anti virus and anti spyware are outdated. Opps, I did something wrong.

It feels like my computer is pulling a Cadillac up the Rockies...very slow.

As I stated in another post, mine was acting sluggish, especially during bootup. It seemed to take forever for my desktop to finish loading, then, when AVG was running its test, everything to slow down noticeably. Now with Avast!, it's much better.

Will running AVG update fix it?

I started out with Norton when I first got a computer. I found AVG and I have been using it for a couple of years now and I like it.

I'm going to bring up my Netstat and see if it's still eating my BW. *fingers crossed*
