For almost 60 years, Dianne Odell lived inside a 7-foot-long metal tube, unable to breathe outside it but determined not to let it destroy her spirit.
Odell, 61, died Wednesday when a power failure shut off electricity to the tube and stopped the pump drawing air into her lungs.

You would have thought that the relatives could spring for a grand to buy a back up generator for the pump.
And you can't buy it when you need it.
That is a very shallow response.
Your a Jerk.
Helps to read the article. They did and were unable to get started, in addition they had hand pump.
But was to no avail, Go called her home.
Some of us have 02 canisters and if nothing else we pull out the bag and pump by hand.
It never ceases to amaze me the number of people who do not use the ‘Excerpt Read more at ____.’ Yet they are quick to comment.
Indeed.
And those who cared for and loved her.

Strong faith in the gift of life.
thx
It's amazing that her family was able to shield her from those who would wish to harm her. It seems her strength and kindness were characteristic of her family.
A good race well run, rest now.
Timothy ? - I love that verse
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus
God rest her soul.
Indeed.
May she rest in eternal peace.
i found it
2 Timothy 4:
6For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time has come for my departure. 7I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that dayand not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing
As a member of the “silent generation”, I well remember the scourge of polio. Most of us had at least one friend, neighbor or classmate hobbled by braces. What a great country we live in that has all but eliminated this once common sight.
That this brave woman had survived so long in a lung is not only a testament to her fortitude, but also to the dedication of her care givers. The guilt they must now feel is unimaginable.
That being said, PM and test your generators on a regular basis. Even if you don’t need them for life sustaining machines.
No...their comments were right on the money. Looks like you are the jerk.
That's nice. Some of us have clock radios, which is just as relevant.
An O2 bottle doesn't help someone in an iron lung. All it does is increase the concentration of oxygen in the air she's not breathing. A hand ventilator is slightly less useless. An iron lung expands and contracts the chest cavity; it doesn't just push air.
Boy is an artist and has this to say about physical impairments. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/24839478/
Unlike a brain or spinal injury on a respirator the Iron lung works more exterior?
The only people I know who have polio are those who are going through a relapse of symptoms in late age and it is not to the extreme of needing durable equipment to assist them other than maybe a cane.
THEIR????
I was resoponding to one insensitive comment by ONE poster.
I have a wind up radio which is handy when the storms hit.
She earned a high school diploma, took college courses, and wrote a children's book. Prayers for the family.
Don't play mind checkers with me smartass. The poster made a valid point that you apparently didn't agree with or even understand, so you replied with an ad hominem insult. What goes around, comes around.
Nice link to her busy social life.
Does anyone know why the vaccine went from a sugar cube to an innoculation?
With people questioning the other elements in the vaccine ....I wonder why they stopped using the sugar cube method.
Speaking from personal experience, iron lungs can be operated manually for several hours, or by backup battery. It wouldn’t have taken even $1000 to get a generator. My Cabelas catalog offers a Champion generator for $399.
I stand my ground.
I tried to find her children's book, "Blinky, Less Light." Apparently it has sold out.
Like Odell’s, Nick’s story is inspirational. IMO, they led/lead happier lives than those who constantly whine.
Then you must be hovering in mid-air because you haven't done anything but call someone a jerk. There's no ground for you to stand on.
Check out #34. They’re still arguing about a generator, and obviously neither one read the article.
"We did everything we could do, but we couldn't keep her breathing," Beyer said. "Dianne had gotten a lot weaker over the past several months, and she just didn't have the strength to keep going."
Odell, who contracted polio when she was 3 years old, lived with her parents, Freeman and Geneva Odell, and their house was equipped with an emergency generator designed to fire up immediately in a power failure.
"But for some reason, it didn't come on," Beyer said.
Secularists see a not so perfect body and they want to destroy it. They may frame it with religious platitudes but that’s just a ruse. How many religious platitudes did we hear re: Terri from trolls? Too many. Disabled people can lead happy lives if they are given the chance. If they aren’t happy, that’s their problem but they all have a right to live.
Exactly.

I pumped one for 2 hours during a power outage in 1976.
Exactly.
Oops, it appears in the 2nd photo she was in an Emerson as well. I’m not sure if they all had the manual pump.
It says in the article they did attempt manual pumping with no results. My guess is the power and backup went out way before they reached her. A pretty painful way to die.
May she rest in peace.
I’ve seen dozens of Emerson Iron Lungs and the manual pump is an integral part of the machine. I’m not sure it would work at all if the manual handle were removed, since the same mechanism works the bellows whether the motor is running or it’s being operated manually.
If they did try to pump manually and it didn’t work, then there was a major failure of a straightforward system. I guess time has to be up sometime.
RIP
She was gone before they realized. It could take as little as 5-10 minutes.
“when a power failure shut off electricity to the tube and stopped the pump drawing air into her lungs.”
How sad, and to think a generator, even a small one, would have saved her.
And it still is continuing a day later. Now read #49. What planet from what universe are these people from?
