Computer Help Needed

This afternoon my husband set up a computer for the kids. Once everything was set up, he checked to make sure all computers were connected to the net via the router. All looked great!

Then one of the kids downloaded some type of crap that has caused our internet connection to be kaput. I contacted our internet provider – after testing they determined that the problem was not within the cable box. (Each computer can connect to the internet if hooked up directly to the cable box). They gave me the customer service number to the router company ~ the gal said they could check to see if it was a router problem. The customer service lady for Linksys said that since our router is about eight years old it was out of warranty, but for a mere $32.95 they could have a tech check out the problem. (After a few colorful words from my husband) We went out and purchased a new router for $25.00.

The problem still exist. (I have not yet recontacted the router company.)

Each individual system can connect to the internet via the cable box. When all systems are connected to the router, there is no internet connection.

We have tried the basic turn it off, turn it on again ~ with no luck.

Does anyone have a clue how to fix this problem?

Hmmmmm.......I understand that some cable companies and IP’s are blocking limewire peertopeer these days. Nasty stuff......

I guess you won't be too surprised to hear that I don't recognize that model. <grin>

Can you get a little more precise detail of that second routers model?

I saw that reset button ~ I will try that to see what happens. Should I also hit the reset button on the cable modem?

You are totally infested. You might get good results with Ad-Aware (www.lavasoft.com). You might also have to wipe and reinstall Windows.

Better yet, buy a Mac.

It’s limewire. Lose it. screwed up min to Kingdom Come.
Get rid of it and reset.

It should bring up your router configuration information screen.

The proper address will vary by ISP / router model.

To find the one that applies to your setup, open a command prompt (Windows-key R; enter cmd in the window). Type ipconfig. You should see something like this:

Windows IP Configuration


Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

        Connection-specific DNS Suffix  . :

        Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
        Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1

C:\Documents and Settings\cynwoody\desktop>
The address in red is your router. That's what you should type into your browser location box. Hopefully, you will see a login screen of some sort. Try leaving the userid blank and entering admin as the password. If that doesn't work, find the manual for your router (probably available on the net if you can't find your paper copy) and see what the default combination should be. You may need to hard-reset the router to get it back to the default.

If it’s a SWITCH it ain’t gonna work. Period.

Obviously, one would never hear about good-working router issues...they just do what they are supposed to do. But, I bot a brand-new Linksys BEFSR41 at a church sale for $4! Sealed in plastic-wrap! It worked for about a day or two, then I plugged my laptop into it and it just stopped. I did every variation of power-down, reset, reboot, etc etc I could think of, before bypassing said router and visiting several user groups. There were oodles of comments from folks (clearly much more skilled than I am) who could not get the thing to work. Many appeared to have had good luck with older ones, then theirs crapped out, then they bot a new one of the same type and couldn’t get it to work. That’s all I can tell you.

That could be it too, good point. She might have cables that are or are not cross wired, and perhaps her new router is not auto-sensing the wiring of the ethernet cable. In which case, no link level, no lights, no nothing.

I sense that I am a long way from translating the above into something useful, however.

My son was desperate to play a game on his XBox (he was not the one that caused the problem) and volunteered to purchase a new router. Because he is a young man with not a lot of money . . . you get a router that cost $25.00! ;-)

We are using ethernet.

Bookmarking great directions! ... I use linksys and have for two computers over two years now. Never had a problem when the cable was sending signal. But you never know ...

Windows Vista won't let that stuff in. I have two machines running it now with no problems at all. Non.....ZIP....NADA!

Mac's ain't perfect either. I understand they recently proved the OS could be hacked in 30 seconds or less......LOL.

Not of the systems work through the router.

Software did not come with the new router.

I will let Eaker know that shooting the system will not help.

Well, it could work, if the cable modem will issue multiple DHCP addresses. I just setup one that way myself yesterday, for a relative a thousand miles away. They couldn't get the fancy router I had recommended to them working (just like this current thread) so I had them replace that router with a simple four port switch. It works fine.

My latest guess -- the link from the switch to the cable modem is not working, due to the wrong kind of ethernet cable. Plugging that cable into a different port on the switch might help.

But I still need to figure out what kind (model number) of switch she has. I'm not having much luck there yet.

Have you called Linksys? We have that same system and always have to go through them when we install a new one.... which has happened three times. One blew with some lightening, and yes, we have a surge protected plug. Another died within two months of purchase and they just gave us a new one. EAch time though, we had to go through them to get it to work.
