TOKYO A black jumbo watermelon auctioned in northern Japan fetched a record $6,100 Friday, making it the most expensive watermelon ever sold in the country and possibly the world.
The 17-pound premium Densuke watermelon, one of only 65 from the first harvest of the season, was purchased by a marine products dealer who said he wanted to support local agriculture, according to Kyodo News agency. The fruit is grown only on the northern island of Hokkaido.
In a country where melons are a luxury item commonly given as gifts, the watermelon's hefty price tag follows another jaw-dropping auction last month, where a pair of Yubari cantaloupe melons sold for a record $23,500.
But for watermelon, Friday's winning bid drew a gasp even from veterans of the expensive-fruit market.

Nope! Ain’t gonna go there......just ain’t......
Day in and day out P. T. Barnum is proven right again and again...
I had a friend (yeah, that's it) who went to this place once. He paid a huge amount of money, and all I, er HE, got to do was LOOK at the melons.
A black watermelon? I’ve got Moon and Stars watermelon growing in my small vegetable garden. It’s an heirloom variety that was rediscovered recently. I’m a novice at gardening but so far so good — the snow peas are getting a little aggressive and I’m not having much luck with the heirloom sweet peppers but the tomatoes are looking good.
Me thinks... this guy forked himself! I can see nObama, in a burst of multiculturalism, making this guy Secretary of Agriculture.
Gardening PING!............
Truer words never spoken:
“a fool and their money are soon parted.”
I can see that. We held an auction to help a local family with some legal bills stemming from an adoption (sticky mess). One apple sold for over $50.00 and then the buyer put it up for re-sale. If I remember right, the second buyer paid close to $100 for it. Then ate it on the spot and wrote a check for twice the sold amount. Lots of farm and "bumpkin" type folks at this auction. My folks bought a collectible car model at the auction and walked up and gave it right back to the family. Good folks in my home-town. At least there were at one time. Now, I don't recognize it.
Whoops, we didn't hold the auction, we went to the auction that was held to help them...
And, if I remember correctly, a lot of the folks who bought things that were family personal items gave them back to the family - other items were perishable goods or vacation packages and the like that were donated by friends, family and local businesses for the purpose of the auction...
Oh, yeah! You know-GoGo Yubari, from Kill Bill. Pretty nice melons, IIRC!
