Sen. John McCain, the Republican presidential candidate, has released his tax returns for the past two years, including details about the money he donated to charitable causes.
In 2007, the Arizona senator reported $405,409 in total income and contributed $105,467, or 26 percent of his total income, to charity.
In 2006, Mr. McCain said he had $358,414 in total income and donated $64,695, or 18 percent of his total income, to charity.
The tax returns were filed solely by Mr. McCain. His wife, Cindy McCain, an heir to a beer distribution company in Phoenix who has reported wealth of $100-million, files a separate return each year and does not plan to release her tax returns.
A statement from Mr. McCains campaign said that most of the senators charitable contributions were made to the John and Cindy McCain Family Foundation, which makes direct contributions to charities.
The senator and Mrs. McCain each make gifts to their foundation, which is focused on helping organizations that work for the spiritual, educational, and medical needs of the community.
Mrs. McCain has donated the same amount to charity as her husband a total of $170,162 for each of them over the past two years, his campaign said. The private foundations informational tax returns are available on the campaigns Web site.

“the senators charitable contributions were made to the John and Cindy McCain Family Foundation”
Scam. I say that as the contributor to “Mr and Mrs MWT Charitable Foundation.” It’s a legitimate charity, but you can put things like ranches in it and have your children be on the board and grandchildren, etc.
Rich people serve on each others charitable boards to get perks and free trips.
LOL. A “scam” but “legitimate”. Kinda like “Madonna’s Music...an oxymoron.”
Yeah, pretty much.
You do real charitable work, but ride in a lear jet to do it, which ride become and charitable deduction — and stop off at the Atlantis and go swim.. Have orphans come live on your ranch . . . that you no longer pay taxes on. Etc.
I only contribute to the “People’s Fund” myself....
Not a lot of difference . . .
'nuf said. Just because you may not approve of the way it is done doesn't make it a scam.
Please, if you can, detail the particulars of McCain's "scam" charity.
One thing about leftists and charity -
you’ll find they give to things like the philharmonic, the ballet, and other “cultural” organizations,
things that they and their fellow elites enjoy attending,
while conservatives give to charities that actually help poor people.
“Please, if you can, detail the particulars of McCain’s “scam” charity.”
See, that’s the thing about private charities — there is no public accountabilty, as they don’t accept outside dontations.
I just happen to be in a position to know how these type of private charities work. They’re a wonderful place to park assets and give the useless nephew (er, I mean wonderful in-law) a place to work.
Sooooo, sounds like they could be truly useful or they could be a scam. But there is no real way to know for sure.
Seems to me if one had a lot of assets, one would want to run one's own charity to be certain the causes one believed in would truly be helped.
Somehow I think if McCain's charitable trust were a scam, the LameStream Press would've detailed that by now. Or, maybe like the New York Slimes, they're sitting on info waiting to release it at the "proper time".
I freely admit speculation.
But it is speculation from personal experience, and just running in that circle.
The “Heinz Foundation” is a perfect of example of this type of semi-scam -— as well as the “farm” Kerry had in a private charitable trust.
I’ve stayed on many a boat and flown on many a plane owned by a “charity.”
Yes, and they get the private balconey for life and for their children.
Same with university private boxes — held for charity -— used to entertain clients . . . .
I understand.
