Car owner knocks out would-be thief

A suspect in a car break-in was socked in the face and held for police after the car’s owner and a neighbor interrupted his work.

Walter Elliott, 41, is being held in the Shelby County Jail on $25,000 bond.

According to a police affidavit, a neighbor called Rubin Whittaker of the 1300 block of Hemlock at 5 a.m. Tuesday and told him somebody was rummaging through his van.

Whittaker and another neighbor, Anthony Williams, went to the van and told the man to get out.

The suspect began to run, but the escape attempt was aborted when he was struck in the face, knocking him cold.

When officers arrived, they found Elliott in the yard and under guard.

Elliott, who has a history of arrests dating to 1985, is scheduled for a video arraignment Thursday.

There are criminals in Memphis that have a rap sheet of hundreds of arrests Sad to say, but it's a revolving door at 100 North Main..

Memphis has what I call a "catch and release" program for criminals. Did ya hear about the man arrested last week for killing his 2yr old daughter over a potty training accident? He was free and awaiting trial for another murder case when he killed his baby girl.

Lester St. murders? The killer had killed before. Catch, photograph, feed, release.
