Beijing -- The e-mail said Amanda Beard - the often-provocative American swimmer - had been scheduled for one of those anti-fur publicity stunts by PETA, which on this day I took to mean People for the Ethical Treatment of Amanda.
The e-mail from PETA's Asian Pacific branch said Beard was supposed to shed her clothes and denounce the wearing of fur, but why anyone would wear fur in the summertime in Beijing is beyond me. The spectacle was to take place at the ultra-swanky Pangu 7 Star Hotel across the street from the Water Cube swimming venue.
When I arrived, the entrance was cordoned off and hotel employees would not allow ingress. Eventually a man came out and said the news conference had been canceled.
Did the Chinese get nervous about the prospect of a risque American taking part in an expression of free speech in support of a controversial organization? Unspecified security concerns were cited.
The event was hastily shifted to the gates of the Olympic Village, where a clothed Beard held a poster of herself in the all together that urged, "Be comfortable in your own skin. Don't wear fur."

On a side note, hope she doesn't get out and around the many food vendors in China, her head'll explode.
Oh.... I thought they were talking about Katie Holmes.
I can understand her affinity to animals with that horse mouth.
But what about leather Amanda?
See?
SOME people SHOULD be allowed to be naked in public.
Uh huh, a great candidate, politically and aesthetically, for an honorary Kennedy.
I wouldn't expect PETA to even recognize that.
More power to PETA, it holds down the price of meat for me.

Thanks Amanda, you won’t change any minds, we did get to see you naked.
Nothing better, if you ever get down this way I higly recommend it, you should only need reservations if dining over the weekend.
Forst of all, the woman on the poster doesn’t even look like the woman holding it.
Secondly.... sexy???
umm.... no. I’d feel like a necrophiliac touching something like that. That’s not sexy.
Women are supposed to have curves, not bones poking out all over.
