I'm looking at purchasing a rifle but I'm having a tough decision on what I want. I want to build it as a close-combat weapon but can't decide on a 5.56 or 7.62. These are actually two rifles I'm looking at:

Just an example. Any variation. How close quarters are you looking at?

Saw a show on the history channel comparing the M-16 and AK-47. While the M-16 was far more accurate, the AK had far far more power. They shot at a cinder block, the 5.56 round just took a little chip off, while the AK shattered the whole thing.
I think it is a crime that our soldiers only have a weapon that fires 5.56 rounds. (the hollow point issue is another story) We need to develop a rifle that can function in the field can be accurate and kill with one shot.

I want to build it as a close-combat weapon
I'd let the 12 gauge be my close encounter weapon!
As to the two rifles mentioned, why not both? Can't go wrong that way!

Unless you anticipate a running gun battle in a warehouse, go with the .308.

It will be a cold day in hell before I own any rifle made by Russia.

I don’t ever recall someone saying, “my main battle rifle brings too much fire power to the table.”

Okay, maybe I shouldn’t say close-quarters because it won’t be the primary home defense weapon (That’s reserver for the XD40). I mainly looking at a decent tactical type rifle.

This might not be the best site to ask about guns/ Not that a lot of Freepers don't own guns, but a site like
Shot Gun news would have more information for you/

Totally agree. Hitting your target is hard under the best of circumstances with pistol or rifle. I know. I use to compete. The shotgun is the way to go. Less likely to miss, and shotguns dont have that nasty tendency to hit someone who lives next door or your child in a bedroom. And the sound of someone jacking a round would scare ME more than the click of someone chambering a round.

Thanks. I usually go out www.ar15.com forums but I was already here so I thought I would ask the freepers.

Get the best of both. Alexamder Arms make the 5.5 Gendel, Has the 5.56 form factor, fits in M-16. Has better impact, energy, etc than a 7.62 NATO round!
