Golden Gate Bridge Toll Goes Up Tuesday ($6)
KCBS ^ | Sep 1, 2008

Tolls go up on the Golden Gate Bridge Tuesday with bridge directors hoping to chip away at a huge projected deficit:

KCBS reporter Tim Ryan explains the toll will bring an additional $18 million a year in revenue.

The bridge district is facing a $91 million dollar, five year deficit and every time you roll across the span you'll help just a little bit:.

"The Fastrak toll will go from four-dollars to five dollars and the cash toll will go from five dollars to six dollars," said Marcy Curry, a spokesperson for the district. She recommends people get a Fastrak.

Mary Muszynski of San Francisco recently did. "I did because I go back and forth across the bridge infrequently but enough to make it worth it and with the bridge hike, I get a dollar off," she noted.

About three quarters of morning commuters use Fastrak but just half of total Golden Gate commuters. Authorities figure the Tuesday commute may be slower than usual as people dig through purses and wallets for the extra dollars to get into San Francisco.

Hey, it’s just a bridge that was already paid off. Why not add more of your money to unknown cause that you may or may not support?

Now all the bridges in the bay area have doubled in toll since I moved here in 1995. That the GG bridge is 91 million in debt is a travesty considering the bridge probably brings in more than a 100k a day.

Maybe my quick, in-the-head math is wrong, but they are spending about $100 MILLION a year to “maintain” a bridge.

When I lived in the area, I recalled seeing a program where the tolls not only went to the bridge, but all these other programs - like subsidizing the bus services, etc. If it were just the bridge, I doubt it would be that high.

Hey Nick! - How do I get MY Cut?

A dollar for me, $5 for them. (Oh, I forgot.) A dollar for me, 25 cents for you...

FYI / fwiw - (info from another thread) & mentioned above:

Yes, there has been one [toll] roadway that I am aware of [in So CA]. There may be another I wasn’t aware of.

Did you know the Golden Gate bridge was paid off something like forty years ago? I don’t remember exactly when, but that’s the way it goes.

We start paying and it never ends. They they come back and want even more money. It’s all a big con job.

So FReereps / FReepers - What's your favorite Golden Gate Bridge / SF / Oakland / Bay Area / Pacific Coast story? (Yeah, Berkeley too, if you're careful.)

Mid-80's, two of us took the company van on a "ROAD TRIP!" / service call from Sacto thru the coastal mountains at Clear Lake, and then up 101 to Ukiah. We were there for part of the morning, and then South on 101, for another call in SF. That's the first time I remember going through the short tunnel, and then like WOW! -  The GOLDEN GATE!
Like BIG WOW!

Beautiful clear day / blue sky, and we're going across the Golden Gate Bridge, AND, then
