Don't tell us who is "allowed" to be Vice President...

Posted on 09/14/2008 7:43:21 AM PDT by Religion and Politics

I think part of the dynamic with Governor Palin and the American Electorate is a kind of "Jesse Venturaism" of sorts. We are full up to our eyes of the establishment "vetting" our leaders for us. The Minnesota politicians completely discounted Jesse Ventura as "not vetted" by the establishment and therefore "not allowed" to be Governor. Of course, I'm not associating Governor Palin with Governor Ventura on policies, but I think there is a dimension of this that was pioneered by Jesse. It is a completely different kind of "glass ceiling" that Jesse broke through and I don't think that the spirit of that accomplishment is now dead, but rather just in infancy. I believe we will be seeing many more "servants" coming to office in the future.

Thought?

I agree and disagree, I guess. In a democracy it is the voters' who get to decide who will or will not lead them (duh, I know). The press, if they are doing their job, have an obligation to give us the facts on the candidates. Where we are getting so confused is that the line between news and opinion/entertainment is pretty blurry. So we have facts mixed with opinions.

Me, I actually don't think Gov. Palin has the experience to be president (and that should be the test for VP)--it's a really hard and important job. One that requires years of experience. I like her. I like what she stands for and the future of the GOP she represents.

Can’t stand Ventura for the most part, but I understand what you mean. The solidification of the blogosphere, even beyond where it was in ‘04, is further marginalizing “The Establishment” and their abilities to call the shots as they have in the past. This is a very good thing. It will help strike a fine balance between elitists running things and a mobocracy.

Isn’t Jesse Ventura a retired US Navy SEAL? If so, one thing that he ain’t is a moron. They don’t let morons become US Navy SEALS.

Over the past few years the “Establishment” has succesfully lead Americans to forget what we really beleive and stand for. Sarah Palens arrival on the scene has awakened a slumbering giant. All the apathetic mothers out there, all of a sudden have someone to remind them what the possibilites are.

Governor of CA was also an “outsider” to politics - though within CA “movie star” circles, he became “an inside” within the elites and power structures.

His Kennedy associations didn't hurt either.

We have let our policies and political offices become far too dominated by the legal profession/class. We need less people schooled in law and more schooled in life to carry our directives to Washington instead of the reverse.

Sarah is a damn good start.

I am pretty sure Ross Perot beat Ventura to that punch, and in national, not state politics, but I take your point.

Ross Perot didn’t win. Ross Perot was a Billionaire. Like I said, I am no fan of Jesse “The Body” Ventura as a politician, but Ross Perot is no Jesse Ventura. Let’s be real.

I didn't know that. Yet here from Wiki:

"From September 11, 1969 to September 10, 1975 he served in the United States Navy as a Navy UDT and was on active duty January 5, 1970 through December 10, 1973 during the Vietnam era. Ventura served with Underwater Demolition Team 12 during his time on active duty.

According to the United States Naval Special Warfare Command policy, Ventura is entitled to use the title "SEAL", due to both his service in the UDT and SEAL teams, and his successful graduation from UDT-R (now BUD/S) training[citation needed]. He was awarded the National Defense Ribbon and the Vietnam Service Ribbon but was not in combat to qualify for the Combat Action Ribbon. In his autobiography, Ventura described SEAL training as the toughest experience of his life. "It's worse than anything you can imagine," he wrote, "You have to want it bad, very bad." Ventura always mentioned how much he respected his SEAL instructor Master Chief Petty Officer Terry "Mother" Moy. He asked Moy to stand by his side when he was sworn in as governor. He ended his inaugural address with the SEAL war cry "HOOYAH!" The Official United States Navy SEAL website contains his bio, and he is considered one of the SEAL's famous Alumni."

I am impressed.

I'm still impressed by anyone who enlisted, went through the training he did and served.

Thanks for your service to our country.

Do I detect a small ration of jealousy in amongst those sour grapes? Somehow I don't think that all swiftboaters don't share your contempt for all Seals who didn't receive assugnment to combat.

By the way, do you sneer at all swift boat trained men who did not get into combat for one reason or another -- or just Seals -- whom you obviously envy?

PS: Congratulations for serving honorably as a Swifty. They sound like quite a bunch to be proud of.
