Don’t prepared for might, that’s a waste of effort and storage space, stick to likely.

And to determine what is likely, start with what was. In the DC area, I focus on hurricanes (rare, but Isabel messed things up in 03), ice storms, damaging wind storms (tornado touch downs, sheer winds), heat related power outages, terrorist attacks (can affect distribution of consumer goods - i.e., no groceries on shelves for a few days), serious flu outbreaks and localized civil disturbances (expecting some of these real soon).

“...localized civil disturbances (expecting some of these real soon)”.

Yeah Meow, I live near the same area as you do, and I am also expecting trouble. Forewarned is forearmed.

I hope nothing happens, but I want to be prepared.

Socks.

Guns and ammo to guard the socks.

Laundry soap to wash the socks.

Spare socks.

Except... I don’t have spare socks!

I need to get a couple sheets of quarter inch plywood, maybe later today I’ll shop for plywood - and SOCKS!!

I agree. A fork and a bowl is an egg beater.

I am supposed to be the forgetful one...

This page has more handy ideas for survival and making do:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/chat/1990507/posts?q=1&;page=5951

On the page before it, should be a post for making your own diaper wipes, easy and cheap....Useful, even without a baby.

The most important things that come to my mind is booze for trading stock and medicinal uses.

Very large needles and regular and strong thread, dental floss is excellent, use it to repair tents, coats, and shoes.

Coffee and a boiling pot for water, without coffee you may experience headaches, as withdrawal symptoms.

Peroxide and alcohol will treat most wounds.

Salt.

And I want silverware.

Once, for a week we camped in the hills with one pocket knife and 4 people.

The 2 ‘men’, did not like the way I had packed the car, so they rearranged it and left the basket of dishes and silverware out of the car, sitting in the driveway.

Bill could open a can with his knife and we cut cardboard for spoons, survived, but you won’t hear about how gracious and non complaining I was.

Something to keep the kids quiet.

People forget, that when it get real rough, a crying baby or child can mean the death of many, as it will expose the hiding places.

There are some people who train their children for this type of incident.

Simply move in the back yard for a few days and no electric, tv or other modern inventions allowed.

It will give you an idea of what you need.
