I received this from a friend of mine and at first thought this was one helluva pilot. However, the more I look at it the more it looks to me like a small model airplane made up to look like the actual one.
My reasons are: 1) It's supposed to be an air race, but only two voices are heard, not a crowd which would be reacting in horror. 2) The camera stays focused on the plane and doesn't even attempt to follow the wing 3) When the plane lands, the video goes "fuzzy" (which would allow someone to superimpose video of the real thing for the small model)
Any aviation or video people here that can tell whether it's real or fake??
Fake.
I’m thinking the same thing..
Looks funny to me.
This, on the other hand, really did happen:

He will be in Florida this weekend. Why don’t you go down there and ask him.
I’d say it’s real... if it was faked, it is so well done that it would have to have been done by a Hollywood film studio. The engines on those race plane have a phenominal thrust to weight ratio, so the maneuver by the pilot is “do-able”. Effectivly, he used the thrust to break his fall, much like a helicopter.
BAIL OUT LITTLE PLASTIC PILOT!!! BAIL OUT!!!
he’s one helluva pilot if this is real..I don’t know which is why I asked..I’m thoroughly unfamiliar with airplanes (especially stunt planes) and had no idea something like this was doable..
It was fake the last six times it was posted on FR, so I’m pretty sure it’s still fake.
BUT, if you go to the website listed above, there is an interview with the pilot and other information about this.
I tried Snopes but got nothing.
Would have made the national news.
You see the plane in a downward spiral that is basically uncontrolled, the camera loses it, and then a mere 3 seconds later the plane is flying almost level, 4 seconds later it's flying nose up in a controlled fashion.
Stunt planes do have a lot of thrust from their engines and can fly up and basically hover for a bit before falling back to earth. Stopping his downward fall with basically no lift from wings and then change that to a sideways motion by propeller thrust alone would take at least several times as much thrust as it would take to literally hover using the propeller.
Now the plane does appear to be pointed nearly strait up a bit before he gets to the ground, so at least the thrust is in the right direction to slow him at that point, but what force causes him to start moving sideways near the ground? His relatively small tail rudder just forces his momentum sideways and turns the plane horizontal to the ground?
The laws of physics don't work that way.
While the creators obviously put some effort into this it is very obviously fake.
another thing I was looking at is there is no tearing, rumpling or any other visible sign the wing was torn off. It looks as though it was designed to fall off. I’d expect on a stunt plane, there would be significant damage to the body of the plane itself..

Here is another video by the same CG group:
Well, you got me there! Your link helped.
I assumed it was a fake but hated to damn it without facts.
One thing...they never say where or when this supposedly happened. Another reason to doubt it.
