But cheap sensationalism aside, Sgt York was a very entertaining film.

Nearly time to turn in, but - - I have read many accounts of the D-Day landings and seen many interviews with veterans who recount the bullets and the immediate death when the Higgins boat ramp dropped. I tried to imagine it, I really did. But when it is depicted as it was in Private Ryan I really understood. It may not have been entertainment in the pure sense of that word, but I found it spellbinding.

What cheap sensationalism did you find in Sergent York?

What? I found no cheap sensationalism in Sgt York.
We agreed on two points. Cheap senationalism in movies represented by excessive profanity and gore. And Sgt York was a great movie. Two separate issues.

I’d have posted on this thread yesterday, but my husband and I were watching “The Lost Battalion.” Incredible film.

Minor correction. The Wild Geese - which came out in 78 - was not Burton’s last movie. I thought it was 1984 but in fact in played in a mini-series titled Ellis Island after 1984.

Pork Chop Hill is very good but should have been much better. The movie focused on Lt. Clemens not on the fighting (until the very end). It showed the anguish but not the battle.
Try the book by S.L.A. Marshall from which the film was made. The fight shown in the movie was but one small piece of the battle.

Admittedly, David Niven was fluffy, but he did give a fantastic performance in Bridge Over the River Kwai.

I almost had Gallipoli on my list, but its not an American movie. Still great though. The best Aussie movie of all time is "Breaker Morant."

Finally a mention of “The Thin Red Line.”
At the time it came out I figured I would not like it mainly because I figured if Sean Penn was in it....well you know.
Finally caught it on cable, and I must admit, it wasn’t bad at all.

What.... Oh man, I guess in my old age, I conflated him with Alec Guiness. As my #3 step-daughter would say, my bad.
It’s been a long time since I saw it. It was the first “war movie” I was allowed to see, but it must have been a second showing, because I was about 8 or so (’64), and I got to go with my dad. It was one of his favorites.

Did you know that during the war Niven had two jobs? One was making patriotic films for England, the other was leading commando raids across the channel into nazi occupied Europe. He was the real deal.
