Word For The Day, Thursday, November 13, 2008 - horripilation
dictionaries ad nauseum, internet | 13 November 2008 | secret garden

Posted on 11/13/2008 4:31:42 AM PST by secret garden

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

horripilation \haw-rip-uh-LAY-shuhn; ho-\, noun
the act or process of the hair bristling on the skin, as from cold or fear; goose flesh

Example sentences:
There are a few things capable of sending an icy horripilation through even the bravest man.
-- Who Will Provide Social Security?, Washington Times, June 11, 1996

This is not to say that the horripilation Iran's nuclear programme inspires is unjustified; nor is it to claim that no other state would seek to develop or maintain nuclear weapons if the official nuclear powers gave theirs up.
-- George Monbiot, Guardian, January 23, 2002

Whether you're a skeptic or a believer, Celebrity Paranormal Project is fascinating as a demonstration of physiological fear: dilated pupils, nausea, shallow breathing, horripilation, the mind-twisting power of expectation.
-- Vinay Menon, Out of body with Busey, Toronto Star, July 3, 2003

Etymology:
In 1623, from Latin horripilatio, from horripilare "to bristle" + pilus "hair"

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Generally, they have to be a little older than that, but it depends on the species.

"Criminialization of politics, i.e. Clinton impeachment."

If you take the criminals out of politics, Republicans could run pretty much unopposed.

I knew Taylor Lauter when he and his family lived in Michigan. His mom and I worked together and were friends. I remember being at their house one day, when Taylor was first learning martial arts. He was so cute, wanted to show me everything since I was into kickboxing at the time.

oh that is so cool! my daughter is OBSESSED with the Twilight series and we are both looking forward to the movie. Is Taylor Native American? The salesclerk at Barnes and Noble was saying he isn’t, but i was pretty sure he was.

Not that I know of. His mom is from the West Michigan area and I’m pretty sure she’s dutch. Not sure about Dan Lautner though. Never talked with him much since he was always busy being a pilot. Taylor’s nephew’s mom and I used to play softball and volleyball together too. Its a pretty small area where Taylor is from, so considering work ties, etc., most people here know him, or of him.

You’re welcome. His mom and I joked that he was the next Jean Claude VanDam. Who knew? LOL. Most of his fans probably don’t realize he is an extremely gifted martial artist.

Hookeripilation? Merely the fear of cross-stitching a fish with the wrong pattern.

No, no. But “hockerpilation”? - A goalie mom’s fear of somebody spitting on the rink with a cold.

Horripilation is a wife’s fear of chemically shaving too closely.

And LL’s copying her homework from what I copied from her paper before I could copy my homework for her to copy!

That’s not right.... She didn’t say I had to copy it first before she could copy it!

Horripilation is the only appropriate response to an Obama administration. Peter "the good" Hitchens sums it up well in this column. Especially poignant are the last 4 paragraphs.

The night we waved goodbye to America... our last best hope on Earth
