Talented but troubled Giants wideout Plaxico Burress, adding to his litany of off-field woes, accidentally shot himself in the leg on Friday night, a source told the Daily News on Saturday.
Burress, 31, spent the night at a Manhattan hospital with the self-inflicted wound, according to the source. The injury was described only as non-life-threatening, and details of the accident remained sketchy.
The Super Bowl hero, who caught the game-winning pass from Eli Manning, was already expected to miss Sunday's game against the Washington Redskins with a hamstring injury.
The Giants were due on a Saturday afternoon flight to Washington. The team had no comment on the report.
Burress has become a season-long distraction for the Super Bowl champions, creating endless controversy with his bad behavior. Over his four seasons in New York, Burress has been fined more than 30 times by the Giants. He was also benched for a 2005 game in San Diego after showing up late for team meetings.
The season's litany of disasters came after Burress reached the pinnacle of his career. He caught the winning TD in the Giants' Super Bowl victory, and signed a five-year, $35 million contract in September.

He's gonna cost the Giants the Super Bowl with his idiotic antics. He "accidentally" shoots himself in the leg?? Somebody get this guy to a shrink.
Btw, no news as to whether the nitwit shot himself with BB pellet OR .45.
As though his “bad hammy” wasn’t enough to stop him from playing.
Good thing we’ve got guys who can step up, but Burress is a force - we need ‘em.
Please do not alter headlines.
Check.
The Giants alright last week without Buress and Jacobs. Eli got it done with TE Kevin Boss. The kid is huge at 6’6”, 253 lbs and he is pretty fast.
Go Cowboys
Too bad it wasn’t a head wound...fatal...
I took the Giants against Washington tomorrow, I think they can do it without this twit.
there is a woman involved in this shooting somehow...I said it first!
Yeah, but the Rams D is NOT the Cowboys, the rest of the schedule is brutal, and when the money's on the line Plax is amongst the best. Teams HAVE to double him when he's right.
TE Boss is holding his own, but injuries are building up and the Giants have got to get ready for the stretch run.
I think the Headline said it first...
The ‘Boys? Too little, too late. Not hungry enough. They’re going no where.
Why are all the troubled receivers from Michigan State?
Now, now...You must be an Eagles’ Fan ;-)
I always liked Plex as a player, but what a frikkin head case he is.
Yeah, the G-Men CAN do it w/0 Plax vs. the Skins. Portis is hurt as well. They have no offense. But will the Giants be flat? Lotta injuries on the Giants’ side - they could be resting people.
Btw, what the line?
WORST case scenario?: The "woman" has very large hands and prominent Adams' apple.
When your pistol caliber is higher than your IQ, natural law cuts in with the first law of plumbing, s—t don’t flow uphill!!!
HUH?
f my name had been Plaxico I don’t know what I would have to done to myself, accidentally or not!
