PALMDALE - Los Angeles County officials say they will establish a "strike team" intended to reduce the threat of aggressive dogs in the Antelope Valley. The Valleywide team is expected to be in place after Jan. 1, said Marcia Mayeda, director of the county Department of Animal Care and Control.
Formation of the team is the result of a successful two-month pilot effort that reduced the number of dangerous dogs in Lancaster, Mayeda said.
The team will use tactics similar to those implemented during the pilot effort, which was ordered by county Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich.
The Lancaster effort resulted in raids on 42 illegal kennels, impoundment of 163 pit bulls and citations for 95 owners.
During the crackdown, Animal Control officers patrolled city parks, searched abandoned houses and visited problem areas to find dogs that posed threats to the safety of residents.
Formation of the strike team was discussed Nov. 20 during a meeting between the Palmdale City Council and Antonovich.
At the meeting, Palmdale City Manager Steve Williams asked county officials to undertake a similar effort in his city.
Mayeda said steps to establish the aggressive-breed strike team already were being taken and that the team should be in place after New Year's Day.
She also encouraged the city to adopt an ordinance similar to one already adopted by the county that makes owners responsible for the cost of any services incurred by the shelter in relation to their animals.
Nancy Quelland, Palmdale's deputy city manager, told county officials the number of Animal Control officers available to patrol the Antelope Valley at times was inadequate.
"I'm not sure, given the (Valley's) size and the population, that we have adequate staffing," especially when patrol officers are reassigned to duties inside the shelter because of staffing problems, Quelland said.

I am suspicious of this and will be very surprised if many abuses don’t occur.
Ping
And we got Capone on tax evasion.
Woof
I thought it was an anti-terror “strike force of dogs” to attack terrorists! Honest, that’s what came to mind first!
Perhaps it’s an anti-terrior strike force!
ROFLMAO!!!!!
gREAT!!
“wHO? WHO/ WHO LET THE DOGS OUT???”
Suspicious of what?
WARNING - USE EXTREME CARE -
absolute, 100% Pit lover on this end.
Thanks for the ping. I dislike aggressive dogs but I dislike overall bans much more. Case by case should be the practice and owners liable for any and all damage.
Not sure what to say if a dog kills someone, there has to be a severe penalty if the dog is known to be aggressive.
Nothing can make up for a death.
.
Death or injury by a violent dog should result in the owners being charged with manslaughter or felony attack
Get a Cocker Spaniel if your dog might kill a 64 year old woman
Everybody wants a “no consequences” system

I agree with your basic thought there, but sometimes there are extenuating circumstances.
A dog that has never harmed anyone could be teased into an anger so great that it manages to climb a chain link fence and harms or kills someone.
That’s why I say ‘case by case’.
I was furious! I demanded that the dog go back to the pound where she came from! I had visions of my precious Mom with her throat ripped out or her arm chewed off!
I was so mad that someone would give such a dangerous animal as a gift! My Mom reassured me that this Pit was an angel! I went to see her to take her to the pound! What did I find? A beautiful dog, sweet ,protective , loving , a lap dog, never growls and obedient most the time.
Boy, was I wrong!
When I worked for our local Veterinarian during my college days I was warned about Doberman"s turning on you. One woman had owned a Doberman for seven years and then one day it turned on her and went for her throat. I do Not trust Dobermans, to say the least.
Good luck with your Dogs!
