TOPICS: Business/Economy; Education
KEYWORDS: bastiat; economics; hazlitt
Both of these are excellent introductions to economics.

The first, "Economic Sophisms," is by the French writer Frederic Bastiat (1801-1850). http://www.econlib.org/library/Bastiat/basSoph.html

The second, "Economics In One Lesson," is by the American journalist, economist, and philosopher, Henry Hazlitt (1894-1993). http://jim.com/econ/contents.html

Both books are written in a clear, accessible style. Enjoy!

I like Bastiat’s “The Law”. I read it in high school.

“The art of economics consists in looking not merely at the immediate but at the longer effects of any act or policy; it consists in tracing the consequences of that policy not merely for one group but for all groups.”

". In any case, the net result of government credit has not been to increase the amount of wealth produced by the community but to reduce it, because the available real capital (consisting of actual farms, tractors, etc.) has been placed in the hands of the less efficient borrowers rather than in the hands of the more efficient and trustworthy."

Words to live by.

I’ll give those a shot, but I have a recommendation of

every econ book that Thomas Sowell ever wrote.

Basic Economics
Applied Economics
Classic Economics
Economic Facts and Fallacies

And that was written back in the 20’s or 30’s.

Fascists will be fascists.

“I’ll give those a shot, but I have a recommendation...”

I agree completely. “Basic Economics” and “Economic Facts and Fallacies” are both masterpieces of straight talking.

I also recommend an earlier and more difficult (i.e., theoretical) work by Sowell entitled “Knowledge and Decisions.”

Currently re-reading “Conflict of Visions” - after my own personal study of worldviews.

Getting a lot more out of it the second time through.
