LAS VEGAS – Brock Lesnar won the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s heavyweight title in stunning fashion on Saturday at UFC 91 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, forcing a referee stoppage of legendary champion Randy Couture at 3:07 of the second round.

Lesnar, the former NCAA wrestling champion who became a superstar in World Wrestling Entertainment, vindicated himself as a mixed martial artist by defeating one of the sport’s greatest fighters.

Lesnar (3-1) landed a booming right hand that sent Couture tumbling backward and onto his back in the center of the ring. Lesnar pounced immediately and jumped on top of his 45-year-old foe, pummeling him with fists and elbows before referee Mario Yamasaki stopped it.

I knew Lesnar would drop this guy. Couture was a great champion but age is now his enemy, not to mention, Brock Lesnar is as tough as they come.

Tough? Dunno if he’s ‘earned’ it in MMA yet. Sure, he’s the champ. But he also lost to a ankle lock.

We shall see. I hope Nog or Fedor gets him soon.

Now that is a match I would like to see, Fedor vs Lesnar.
Of course Fedor vs any top ranked heavy weight is worth looking out for.

I don’t see much in Lesnar’s ground game either. Light heavyweight I think is the exciting division.

Yep, I know he lost one of his 3 matches before fighting for the title, but Brock just beat a 3 time champion in his 4th fight—that says alot. I saw Brock win the NCAA HW wrestling title I believe in 2000 and was amazed at the speed of him. He got a mere 450K for the fight which is not bad for a kid from a North or South Dakota dairy farm. I am predicting that Brock will dominate for a few years to come. The black belts and the boxers can’t compete with former college wrestling champions.

Give him time, this is only his 4th fight. He was an NCAA wrestling champion so he is more than sound on the ground.

“Pride”. The name escaped me earlier. Prior to UFC buying Pride, Fedor was their undisputed HW champion.
When UFC purchased Pride, and brought most of their fighters under contract, Fedor was not happy with what was being offered and went with the (fledgling) Affliction group. Here, he dominated as well.
Now, it seems UFC has little choice but begin putting their best up against Fedor. Only time will tell how this plays out but any Fedor match is one worth viewing. Old or new.

He is a sambo practitioner from Russia. He was the HW champ of Pride before they went under. In Pride there was no upper limit of how heavy a HW could weigh. He weighs about 230lbs and doesn’t cut any weight for his fights. He has beat Nogueira, the interim UFC HW champ, twice in Pride. He beat the former UFC champ Tim Sylvia in 36 seconds. It took Nogueira three rounds to sub Sylvia and it took Randy 5 rounds to win a decision against Sylvia.

Actually he went with M-1 global and I think they loaned him out to Afflition for their first PPV. But I am not sure what his current status with M-1.
