Chilling game of hide and seek with a hungry polar bear

...These pictures show how close one man came to being a polar bear's dinner.

Mmmm, looks like dinner time: The bear stands on its haunches and peers over the car
roof at his prey, a surveyor returning to his vehicle in the Alaskan town of Barrow

The chase is on: The man has his glove off,
but not enough time to unlock his car door

...With no time to unlock the door of his vehicle and climb inside, he tried to duck out of sight.

He's coming to get you: The hungry bear makes his move

Yikes: The bear lumbers around the car as the man sprints for his life

But the hungry bear was not giving up, and a terrifying chase began. First, the beast stood up on its furry haunches and eyed its prey. Then it loped around the car, and even climbed over the bonnet to try to reach him.

Last resort: The man, desperate for shelter, makes a break for a neighbouring truck

Phew: He slips inside the unlocked truck,
nursing more than 100 scratches

...The man eventually managed to take refuge in a neighbouring truck which was unlocked.

His back and head were covered in more than 100 deep scratches where the massive claws had managed to rip through his thick winter clothes and padded coat.

Polar bears are frequently spotted around the area.

They are the world's largest land predator, and are the only animals that actively hunt humans....

Why in the heck would you lock your car door in bear country???

I’m thinking the rips and scratches came just a split second after the last picture as the guy probably slipped on the crap running down his leg...

Seriesly though, that bear was gaining on him and he would have had to pause to open the truck door. I’m figuring there was some brief contact before he could scramble into the truck and close the door.

Scary stuff, no matter how old the pictures.

The man eventually managed to take refuge in a neighbouring truck which was unlocked. ... Barrow is the northernmost town of the United States, 340 miles north of the Arctic Circle.

And the other truck was locked because...?

That .460 will do the job. They make a "Bear Gun" version of that S&W X Frame model with a two inch barrel and bright yellow or orange grips (so you can find it after it rips itself out of your hand when you fire it) in both .460 and .50 calibers.

I'm opting for the .460 with the five inch barrel because it also shoots .45 Long Colt and .454 Casul ammo - giving it a lot more versitality than the .50 with about the same stopping power.

I'm familiar with the 454 casull, but unfamiliar with the 460 mag. Just looked it up. Whoa. I thought the 454 was a hand cannon.

"...and are the only animals that actively hunt humans...”

And would suggest to anyone who believes that to read Jim Corbett's Man-Eaters of Kumaon.

And the other truck was locked because...?

Because he didn't want a polar bear opening the door and stealing his stuff.
