Group sues to force EPA to clean up Chesapeake Bay

WASHINGTON – A conservation group filed a federal lawsuit Monday to force the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to enforce the law and clean up the polluted Chesapeake Bay, citing 25 years of failure to restore the nation's largest estuary.

The lawsuit asserts that the EPA's failure to meet its obligations "has led to the continued degradation of water quality in the Chesapeake Bay," harming natural resources and the residents who depend on them. Poor water quality caused by pollution has harmed the blue crab population, destroyed underwater grasses and hurt bay fish. The losses have badly damaged the soft shell and peeler blue crab fishery industries in Maryland and Virginia.

The U.S. commerce secretary last year declared a blue crab disaster, allowing Congress to appropriate economic assistance.

The EPA has said it's committed to fighting pollution. The agency contends partnerships — not lawsuits — are needed. But William Baker, president of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, and other supporters of the federal lawsuit say political foot-dragging has gone on too long. An EPA spokesperson did not immediately return a call for comment Monday.

The real problem with Chesapeake Bay is that we haven't had a real tropical storm flush it out for the last 36 years.

If it weren't for this dadgummed Global Warming we'd had some stronger hurricanes in here to do the job like they always did until Richard Nixon resigned.

Now he was the man ~ like Karl Rove ~ had a hurricane machine in the basement and could direct them where they were needed.

I thought Isabelle flushed out the bay pretty good,

No till farming and using chicken crap as fertiliser hasnt helped. You just cant spray thousands of gallons 50 years ago they sprayed to kill grasses and they have never returned. Sewage treatment plants and growth havent helped. There are a lot of reasons for the Bay being in trouble, the lack of hurricanes isnt one of them.

Dale Lee in his third post since joining FreeRepublic sent me a message: "This is what". Dale, does that mean you will be coming over tonight to take the snow off my road.

I hope you are not one of those nasty little liberal children who are allowed to use daddy's computer.

Sure it is. We haven’t had a storm that changed the pH of the entire bay since 1972.
