Browns Pick Mangini to Take Over as Coach
NY Times ^ | January 8, 2009 | By JUDY BATTISTA

Eric Mangini, fired by the Jets 10 days ago after a disastrous end to the season kept them from the playoffs, was not unemployed for long.

The Cleveland Browns announced Wednesday that Mangini would become their head coach, replacing Romeo Crennel, one of his closest friends in football. Mangini is expected to be introduced at a news conference Thursday by the Browns, who became the first of six N.F.L. teams to fill its head-coaching vacancy.

The quick rebound for Mangini came despite speculation that he might have trouble finding work again after he was blamed for turning in his mentor, New England Coach Bill Belichick, in the videotaping scandal that became known as Spygate during the 2007 season.

But Randy Lerner, the Browns’ owner, interviewed Mangini the day after he was fired by the Jets, and Mangini immediately became the front-runner. Among others who were interviewed for the job were Josh McDaniels, the Patriots’ offensive coordinator, and Steve Spagnuolo, the Giants’ defensive coordinator.

Smart move by the Browns. Of the fired coaches, Mangini was the best there was. When the Jets were 8-3, there were talks of the organization signing him to a contract extension. The Jets collapse can be blamed on Favre, and New York it’s your turn to put up with his annual off-season soap opera.

agreed, although the collapse is a lot more than just Favre. A lot of players seemed to forget how to play their positions. I thought Mangini’s firing was ridiculous. Unless a coach regularly oversees a collapse at the end of the season, it is not necessarily their fault. The players are adults and are accountable, too. Some seem to fall off in performance either due to fatigue or injuries may take their toll. Terrible mistake, and unless the Jets end up with the Giants D Coordinator or Bill Cowher reconsiders, they are probably going to regret this move.

the collapse of the Jets can be blamed on Farve???? how many Jets games have you watched???

I guess Farve was responsible for a defense that couldn’t tackle....or a defense that couldn’t rush the passer....or a defensive head coach who NEVER adjusted his game plan in three years....

Take it from me- someone whose been to every Jets home games since Nov 1981- Mangini is horrible...his teams were fundamentally flawed, he came with ill prepared game plans and never changed or adjusted to the situation...

this is a hiddeous and rash decision by Lerner- mangina was not a hot property who had teams lining up for his services- the Browns could’ve waited, interviewed some top GM’s (Tom Heckert of the Eagles???) then went back to mangina...

as it is now they’ve got a failed coach and a paper tiger GM....

Mangini over Shanahan?

Never mind that though, I just want these jobs filled with someone other than Spags. Giants need to figure out a way keep Spags happy until Tom decides that he’s through. Losing out on Lombardi and Landry (and more recently, John Fox) is bad enough...

Manginious would be the last coach on this planet I would ever hire. Cam Cameron would have been a better choice and that’s not saying very much. He’s a weasel to the nth degree and to be resposible for the debacle in the last 5 games of the season is inexcusable. Mangini is the ultimate loser. Lerner, you are an absolute idiot; your team deserves to go 0-16 and become the AFC’s version of the Detroit Lions. F**king unbelievable!

Joe the Plumber would have been a better choice and certainly a more popular choice.

Shanahan's too complacent. Besides, he may go to Dallas anyway.

My pick would have been Ron Jaworski. No one on the planet does more work than him.

I spent 16 years watching Favre play in Green Bay. He has a hard-headed attitude and is a dismissive person. When he's playing badly, he'd rather continue playing instead of stepping aside. I'm still peeved over the Giants' NFC victory last January, Favre should have been benched in the 4th knowing it was too cold. There's a reason why Thomas Jones and other players called out Favre.

I watched the last few Jets' games - the important ones that should have been won after the Jets were 8-3 with the division title on a silver platter. There is no excuse for that breakdown, and for Favre throwing interceptions and not getting benched.

hmm...I guess you must’ve missed the San Fran and Buffalo games when the running backs (Gore-Lynch) ran through the Jets defense like it was made of swiss cheese and broke tackle after tackle....Farve’s fault obviously....

how about that Seattle game when the Seahawks took a bunch of guys off the street and suited them up to play offensive line and the Jets defense never got any rush up the field and never laid a hand on Seneca Wallace....Farve’s fault...

of course the fact the Jets had the AFC’s #1 running back yet made the guy a two bit player in the last five games and all but ignored their only true play maker on offense, Leon Washington- was also Farve’s fault...

but hey- I see your point- mangina’s a good coach....(never mind a well known liberal and supporter of liberal politicians- the absolute truth)....

excuse me- your post makes me want to vomit....

Tanks for the pingee!!

I don’t like it at all.

Reports have it the Browns made several contacts with Shanahan’s agent. who imformed them that it would be several weeks before his client would talk to anyone regarding any coaching opportunities.

If I were Randy Lerner, I’m waiting. Hire Pioli and let him know that he won’t be picking the next coach. But again, Randy rushes into a big move without examining every move.

Mangini will also announce that Raiders defensive coordinator Rob Ryan as def. coord., and na.e Jets OC Brian Davoll as OC.

Lerner blew it big time. He had the opportunity to sit back and woo either Schottenheimer(my choice) or Shanahan. But his immaturity and ADD wouldn’t let him get past the Super Bowl. There was no reason to pick Mangini now, nobody else wanted him. So he doles out another 4 year contract that he will have to eat in under two years.

Can’t forgive the Lerner family for the part they played in letting Modell waltz out of town. A new owner is what the Brown’s really need.

You forgot not only was all that Farve’s fault. it was also W’s fault too!!

You’re preaching to th choir on this one. We all know about Brett’s gunslinging style . If I’m not mistaken though, he came into a completly new system without a training camp{whether that’s his or the Packers fault is irrelevant}and still found a way to perform and win 8 of their first 11 games.

The Browns could have done better, but no, they settle for second best.
And others, like Billick, Fasse and Dennis Green wait for a call......

I have a feeling Cowher will end up in Dallas.

I think they’re still paying for Butch Davis’s contract. So what’s 1 more.

Paying 3 coaches at once, sounds pretty stupid tp me.......

Cleveland you deserve every misfortune you get. Manginious is a total moron. You lefties think Sarah Palin is a moron—you haven’t met a true moron until you’ve met Eric Mangini. It’s like hiring General Patton’s personal attendant to run your war. What a joke!
