I built a 105 Howitzer but it was too expensive. Shipping alone was 6k.

I would imagine there are better rifles with greater range. The AR-15 is a great investment right now though, what with FReepers reporting that they’re selling pretty high after the election.

There is that other fact that you can build up an AR15 clone from parts ordered over the web or bought at a show just like a PC enthusiast would make a new Intel-based home computer for themselves.
The actual Federally-serialized component that requires a gun dealer's license to sell is the lower receiver that only cost about $90-$120 a few months ago. The prices have gone up a little bit because of the panic shortage from Obama hysteria, but I think that you can start finding AR lowers again for about $150 or so. Either way, it's a relatively inexpensive entry price for the AR rifle that's affordable to most people. We can regard the AR lower receiver as the motherboard that we'd build up a home-made desktop computer from.
That's a novelty and a cheap buy-in price. The first things to get swept from the dealer's shelves were all of the lower receivers in the country. Naturally, once everyone had two or three of those, the need for all of the rest of the parts to make the rifle functionally shootable were the next things to get swooped up.
Only question I have for you is this: Don't you already have at least one stripped AR15-type lower receiver tucked away somewhere? Even if you have no real interest in one at the moment, I should warn you that you may or may not be able to get one this time next year, and if you do it could cost five or ten times the price. Only time and Sen. Chuck Schumer will tell...

yeah, buying a lower sounds like a good idea. My thought was to buy along the lines of how common the ammo is. Never been a fan of the AR-15 but I did break down and buy a Remington 7615 pump for several hundred bucks; something that can use .223.
Ok. I’ve been dying to ask this question, and it’s not entirely off-topic so here goes. What is the attraction for folks buying out shelf loads of AR-15 since the election?
No, really. I’ve stocked up on ammo and added a few shotguns to my repertoire but why the AR-15?
1. You want to use the right tool for the job. The saying is to never bring a knife to a gun fight, it could also be said “Never bring a pistol or a shotgun to a Rifle fight”.
2. The AR-15 is the musket of yesteryear – the basic weapon of the Rifleman.
3. As a FREE Citizen (for now anyways)you should own and know how to use the weapon that is common to a number of armies around the world.
4. You want to buy what is likely to be banned first. Shotguns will be the last weapons to be banned – but make no mistake, the Social-fascist Dhimmicrats will try to ban them as well – but for now they are 'PC' since they go along with the idiotic 'second amendment just for hunting theme'.
OTOH, apparently AR's look “Scary” to some – when in reality, it's simply a Rifle, a piece of hardware – but guess what Social-fascist Dhimmicrats will come after first?

Actually, I went to the gun show in Houston yesterday and bought some really cool aftermarket components for the smaller AR in the picture. whereas before it looked very "1970s" and irrelevant it now looks more lethal and cool. Of course, actual lethality remains unchanged, but with the laser I can now make my cat freak out completely.
They have a nice video series on assembling the ar15 from parts kits. Very well done.
