Ok. I’ve been dying to ask this question, and it’s not entirely off-topic so here goes. What is the attraction for folks buying out shelf loads of AR-15 since the election?

No, really. I’ve stocked up on ammo and added a few shotguns to my repertoire but why the AR-15?

It’s either gotta be as an investment or a SHTF type purchase. If the latter, I can think of much cheaper rifles that would fit the bill. If the former, well, I don’t know if I’d be buying investment grade pieces right now. But that’s just me :-)

I believe the reason is to get one before zero declares all scary black rifles illegal.

...is my guess. Personally I’m a cheap commie rifle fan.

I don’t know why, I live in NYC and don’t own anything.

I would imagine there are better rifles with greater range. The AR-15 is a great investment right now though, what with FReepers reporting that they’re selling pretty high after the election.

The way I understand it is that the AR-type rifle has got to be the most common/ubiquitous long arm being sold nowadays. I don't have numbers on that to back me up, but it's gotta be a fact.

There is that other fact that you can build up an AR15 clone from parts ordered over the web or bought at a show just like a PC enthusiast would make a new Intel-based home computer for themselves.

The actual Federally-serialized component that requires a gun dealer's license to sell is the lower receiver that only cost about $90-$120 a few months ago. The prices have gone up a little bit because of the panic shortage from Obama hysteria, but I think that you can start finding AR lowers again for about $150 or so. Either way, it's a relatively inexpensive entry price for the AR rifle that's affordable to most people. We can regard the AR lower receiver as the motherboard that we'd build up a home-made desktop computer from.

That's a novelty and a cheap buy-in price. The first things to get swept from the dealer's shelves were all of the lower receivers in the country. Naturally, once everyone had two or three of those, the need for all of the rest of the parts to make the rifle functionally shootable were the next things to get swooped up.

Only question I have for you is this: Don't you already have at least one stripped AR15-type lower receiver tucked away somewhere? Even if you have no real interest in one at the moment, I should warn you that you may or may not be able to get one this time next year, and if you do it could cost five or ten times the price. Only time and Sen. Chuck Schumer will tell...

1. You want to use the right tool for the job. The saying is to never bring a knife to a gun fight, it could also be said “Never bring a pistol or a shotgun to a Rifle fight”.

2. The AR-15 is the musket of yesteryear – the basic weapon of the Rifleman.

3. As a FREE Citizen (for now anyways)you should own and know how to use the weapon that is common to a number of armies around the world.

4. You want to buy what is likely to be banned first. Shotguns will be the last weapons to be banned – but make no mistake, the Social-fascist Dhimmicrats will try to ban them as well – but for now they are 'PC' since they go along with the idiotic 'second amendment just for hunting theme'.

OTOH, apparently AR's look “Scary” to some – when in reality, it's simply a Rifle, a piece of hardware – but guess what Social-fascist Dhimmicrats will come after first?

What is the attraction for folks buying out shelf loads of AR-15 since the election? As I've read the other replies to your question, here are 2 more: Nostalgia for what I had in the military, and easy to field-strip/clean.

Even knowing how sensitive the M16A2 was to dirt, I loved the rifle. Up till the USMC, I'd never fired a weapon. And durned if a brand new AR-15, based on the current military's M4, doesn't feel lighter and shorter than I remember.

The first rifle Obama (Firearm Salesman of the Year, Class of 2008) sold me was a second-hand Mini-14, chosen over an AR because it was $200 dollars cheaper, and I knew the gun's reputation for reliability. Soon as I slept on it, I had buyer's regret.

That was quite a few paydays ago. One of my gun dealers had 3 different ARs this past weekend. One was a brand I'd never heard of, one was a scope-ready Bushmaster, and the one I bought is a Bushmaster with carry handle, iron sights & no picatinnies. (Admittedly, the collapseable stock with upper sling loop is a nice touch.) I may or may not turn it into a frankengun, but right now it settles just right into my grip as soon as I pick it up. All I want at the mo' is a tactical sling.

It was a matter of getting it while the getting was good, ya know?

I b'lieve I'll carry the Mini-14 to the next gun show with a for-sale sign on it, see what kind of offers I get...
