Shortly after the November election, Newt Gingrich disputed the notion that Sarah Palin had emerged from her losing campaign as the new face of the Republican Party, declaring that "she's going to be one of 20 or 30 significant players. She's not going to be the de facto leader."
A few months later, the former House Speaker seems to have had a change of heart. Discussing the 2012 G.O.P. race at breakfast meeting on Monday, he called the Alaska governor "very formidable" and noted that she'd have "a substantial advantage in Iowa."
Of course, Mr. Gingrich himself seems interested in the '12 race, so he could have his own motives for saying this. But the seeming shift in his attitude also speaks to a post-election reality that could be denied in November but not now: Mrs. Palin actually is the de facto leader of what's left of the national Republican Party.
The latest bit of evidence came on Monday - two days after Mrs. Palin once again worked her way into national political headlines by jetting across the country to attend the annual Alfalfa Club dinner, a marquee event on the D.C. social calendar where the attendees included President Barack Obama - with the release of a Rasmussen Poll that found Republicans, by a better than two-to-one margin, want their party to be like Mrs. Palin and not her old running-mate, John McCain.

Go away, Newt.
“...Mr. Gingrich himself seems interested in the ‘12 race, so he could have his own motives for saying this.”
I hope he isn’t planning on being on her ticket. VP maybe?
Don’t try to hang the Republican Party around Palin’s neck. Sure, Palin will use the Republican Party as the vehicle to get elected in 2012, but this ain’t her Party. This is the Party of RINIOs.
No, it will be Ann Coulter. Palin/Coulter ‘12. Chicks with more b***s than all of the men in the Democrat party put together.
ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.... more of the same.... back to work....
Items Gov Palin should strongly endore:
1) seize the fair tax mantle
2) An energy independent America which would create tons of jobs
3) much smaller federal government
Focusing on economic liberty for 2012 after the next four years of chaos just might be the winning ticket....
Just my opinion of course......
Amen!
Hey, it’s her party and she’ll win if she wants to!
This is a lib telling himself Palin’s no theat.
Conservatives have been trying to tell moderates that conservatives win, and moderates lose. Moderates have a choice to make. Live with the American left, or join with conservatives. Moderates may not like everything we stand for, but they will be better off with us in the long run. Homosexuals may not like our culturally conservative values, but we won’t take their guns and tax them to starvation, and we won’t tell them not to be homosexuals. Women’s rights groups, (pro abortion) may have to live with some limits on their right to kill their babies, but the likelihood of their having to stop practicing human sacrifice is zilch. Jesus will have to come, and stop them. All the racial groups and victims groups will still be able to be racial and victim groups, only they will be better off. The 0media can go back to being the revolutionary head of the left. So come on moderates. There is no such thing as liberal lite in today’s politics.
LOL.
Ann Coulter as a politician. Not.
She likes money and fame too much.
I agree with you fully, as it applies to my moral beliefs and as it should apply to the Republican platform. As it will play out in policy is a whole different matter. The Moral Majority came into the Republican Party, giving Reagan his huge victories, and giving both Bush Sr. and Bush Jr. their victories. Without the organization of social conservatives, Republicans can’t win national elections, but for all of the effort, money and votes spent, we’ve lost ground on social issues, maybe not as fast as what we would have otherwise. The so called “moderates” like to belittle social conservatives, and pretend there would be a viable Republican Party without us. Like liberals, they play victims to our politics, but in reality they’ve won, and we’ve lost. As much as I hate it, I don’t see the trend changing. That doesn’t mean I won’t continue to fight the moral degeneracy, or that I give up. I’m just predicting the future of policies based on the past 25 years of reality. But you are exactly right.
