I’m not trying to minimize the problem but I always remind myself that the media lies wildly and exaggerates shamelessly. I’d bet the unrest is less than they would have us believe. Their main purpose is to create a frightened, thus easier control populace.

I agree. However, it is the Gov’t that creates the fear and the media spreads it. Gov’t loves fear, it gets them Bailout bills, Iraq, Pat Act, etc.

While I agree with that premise, I'm not so sure that the US populace will be so "easy to control". We are still an armed populace...how long we will "be allowed" to remain armed is the question.
