You can learn Yiddish plenty quick.

Too bad most Israelis speak Hebrew, Russian, English, German, Polish and about 10 other languages more than they speak Yiddish.

Sadly it is classified as a dying language with the revival of Hebrew with the Jewish state.

Yes, the Haredim speak it but it is dying. In New York most of the Yiddish newspapers and magazines that existed during pre WWII have died.

The younger generation of Jews is learning Hebrew and is not learning Yiddish. Yiddish has now become a language of the old and dying Eastern European immigrants and certain Haredim.

Israel provides almost no support for Yiddish for in Israel the emphasis is on Hebrew as the unifying language.

An entire language and culture that goes back nearly a 1000 years is slowly dying before our eyes. It will survive in some pockets for eternity but has lost all official support.

It is still one of the official minority languages of Moldova, but I dont think that will save the language.

I was thinking he had a brother that was killed in the raid on Entebbe. Might be wrong.

i am not fluent by any means, but I wish I were.
While it is dying out with the non-Hareidi, since they have the highest growth rate of any Jewish community -U.S., U.K., or Israel- it is far from dead.

This is just a curious question since I am an American: I know that Kadima is technically an off-shoot of Likud too (though they quickly veered hard to the left)?

Netanyahu will probably become prime minister, however my question is: Are there a few “right-wing” leaning memebers of Kadima left?

God Bless! Hope you get to learn it and use it more.

The Holocaust “killed” the language in two ways. One of them evil and one of them “good”.

The evil ofcourse was the killing of 6 million Yiddish speaking European Jews. That killed a bulk of the native speakers.

The “good” was the fact that Israel was founded and Hebrew was resurrected from the dead and became the official language of Israel.

So, while it is extremely sad that Yiddish lost out to Hebrew in Israel, in the end a good/great thing has happened that Hebrew is now a alive/thriving language. 60 years ago if you told me that young kids would be speaking Hebrew as their NATIVE language and joking in it and studying in it.. and talking to their friends in it, I would have told you that you were insane.

Yet, look at Hebrew now. It is cool. It is hip. It is everywhere.
